    Hello all,
I have a 1997 cushman white truck. It has a mitsubishi engine and a Japanese tranny. I just pulled the tranny to cut 4th and 5th gear shafts down to liberate those gears. when I pulled it and took the rear shaft housing off a small check ball (bearing looking) fell out. The only place I can think it goes is in an oil galley in the rear housing. Any help would be awesome. Thank you very much.
    Eric

Thank you for the reply. I put it back together with the ball in the galley. Have no problems an it runs through all gears great. Funny part about your link is I went to the University I got the truck from at auction and they gave me all the manuals for the Cushman. If you need a part number let me know.

I found the source of the ball bearing. It sits just inside where you screw in the reverse light sensor. It's what slides against the 5th / reverse gear rods and when the reverse gear is engaged it rides up the little ramp on that rod and pushes against the push button on the sensor to turn on the reverse light. If you have that ball in hand simply unscrew that sensor, drop it in and screw the sensor back in.

Eric--I have a Mitsu Minicab "Mighty Mits" 4th generation, 84-91, as far as I can figure...LOL. My trans functions fine as a 3 speed manual, but I understand that there may or may not be a 4th and maybe 5th gear in my gearbox. Is there a way to tell if I have a 4 or 5 speed with a "dis-abled" gearing beyond 3rd? Oddly, there is a "5MT" cast into the side of the trans housing, which to me indicates 5 speed Manual Trans.

    Thanks in advance--Chris

Dont know if this will help you or not, but here's the thread for the tranny in the 2002 cushman: http://www.minitrucktalk.com/showthread.php?6674-cushman-4th-amp-5th-lockout
The #6 post will show pictures of the transmission. It should give you an idea if it's the same or not. Another give-away is if your shifter knob has 4th and 5th gear punched in. As far as I can tell, to save money for the american sales they just put in longer shift rods rather than make a totally new transmission. The longer 3th/4th gear shift rod would hit against a plate just behind the throw out bearing when going into 4th and the 5th gear/reverse will hit against the back of the rear transmission housing just aft of the reverse light sensor. It's the cutting of these gear rods by about 3/8th of an inch to at most 1/2 an inch that gives them room to shift into the blocked gears.
    Hope this helps.
