1998 Minicab Won't Idle

First and foremost I am new to the mini truck community. I've always had a curiosity able them and recently found one that was in my price range.

I bought this truck knowing that it didn't run quite right as the previous ownere had adjusted the throttle linkage so the truck would stay at high rpm. I adjusted the linkage back to where it should be and backed off the idle screw. The engine starts right up when cold when the choke is on but once warmed up it will not idle. It must not be getting a steady fuel stream as it pulses and at lower rpm just dies. I pulled the carb off, took it apart and cleaned it then put it back together and wouldn't you know, it runs exactly the same. (Frustrating)

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

    Thanks in advance.

Does it have the stock fuel pump on it or is it an after market fuel pump? It should be an electric pump just behind the cab on drivers side up inside the frame rail?

I see that someone has changed to fuel pump to Mr. Gasket electric fuel pump. Could that be an issue?

Yes that is the issue, the problem with the aftermarket fuel pumps is they arent able to shut off like the stock pump and as a result they just keep pumping and basically just flood out the carb. So you will need to replace that with a stocker and your problems will be over. Now the bad news is the stock fuel pumps are fairly pricey. You can email me at xtrememinitrucks@gmail.com or call our office 417-395-4300 and ill be glad to help you get a replacement. Will need the VIN# of your truck when you call or email.

Brand new stock fuel pump installed with new filter, engine still will not idle correctly. I have to set the idle up to keep the engine running. I assume these should be able to run at 8-900 rpm or less right? Any other ideas?

Is it the same problem as before or has it changed?

It's still the same, runs good at high idle but will kill at lowerer idle. I checked the EGR valve and that is working properly. I don't see any vaccum leaks. Does this sound like an ignition problem?

Yes it should idle around 900 RPM give or take 50, if it still wont idle correctly the problem may not be carb related, have you checked the timing? Have you changed the spark plugs? How about the distributor cap and rotor they can sometimes get carboned up? Have you done a compression check on the motor?

You might wanna test the AC Fast idle solenoid....IF you do have air conditioning? is the button in the on position?
is it possible it's stuck in the on position or something to this effect.
I was thumbing through my manual after i saw your post.

Funny mine is an 89 and I'm seeing the same problems right now I can keep it going at a high idle but after trying to slow it down a bit I just can't keep it steady enough it's either racing or falling on it's face very frustrating but I did find a post from Dan with a very detailed list of steps to adj these carbs just haven't had time to do it yet Btw when u checked out you're egr valve did you take it off the block in trying to fix mine I found the thing to be plugged solid where it meets the block didn't fix my prob but just food for thought

After fighting this I broke down and took it to a small engine repair guy and he pulled the carb and put it into an ultra-sonic cleaner. I guess it had a couple plugged jets. Now it runs perfect, should have done this in the first place.
