Question about transmission / transfer case

I have a 1993 Hijet pickup with 4WD. I bought it Gov. surplus and have just started to work on it. It seems to run fine but it's slow withpout the high range working. I did a search and read the posts about removing the c clip to allow the trans to go into high range. I have 2 questions; I removed the cover on the trans but can't seem to see the clip to be removed. Also there is a gear, w/shifting fork, "in the way" and I'm not sure what it does. It's vacuum operated with a unit on the back of the transfer case. It doesn't look like it has worked for a long time. The truck came from St Louis and it's pretty rusty. I have a repair manual but it doesn't cover the transmission.

Also, I noticed in one of the posts that they removed the back of the transfer case to remove the clip. I could do that but wanted to be sure nothing would fall out that I couldn't get back together without pulling the trans. Aqnd of course I don't have a new gasket.

Thanks for any help you could offer

You must reach into the transmission to get to the clip, if you can have someone move the hi / lo lever in the truck while you are watching what moves in the transmission this helps a lot. I used a long pair of needle nose to remove the clip. I highly recommond doing this job on a lift, I removed the exhaust and just had enough room to do the job. I was very worried if the truck moved, with the way you needed your arm to be to get to the thing it had a good chance of doing some damage to your arm.
