I just got a 89 carry with diff lock & axle lock. I raised tha rear off tha ground put it in 4x4, turned both locks on put in first gear & it wouldn't move, rear tires spin, front drive shaft spins but not tha axle shafts. I'm new to mini truck & tried a search. Thanks for any help.

this may sound silly, but did you turn on the 4x4 inside the cab ? the front wheel mounted locks lock the axles to the wheels but the diff isn't engaged until the lever is in 4wd

Yes, and, can be as simple as the micro switch on the 4WD lever in the cab. Did the 4WD light on the center cluster come "ON"? How about the "axle lock" switch light? Axle lock, not diff lock. Just the mico switch can cause the front diff to not "axle lock"...no front drive on the front wheels, check that mico switch, and let us know what the details are.
Maybe, you have a broken vacuum control line, devil's in the details...

If you give us that, maybe we can help...

I may have mis-read that...I was under the impression the older pre 1990 Carrys had manual locking hubs

The fwd light in tha dash lights up, axle lock lights up. This is my first dealings with a mini, can you tell me wer tha micro switch is & wat I'm looking for? I was told it was a 91, but according to tha vin its a 89. I have a 4x4 with lockouts, there's nothing that l can see unless you have to take tha wheel off.

If both lndicators are lighting up, then it's mechanical.
From the passenger side front, on top of the diff, you can see the control lever and vacuum diaphragm.
Check that out for proper operation.

The only manual I know of is the Danko manual available through Lulu but as far as I'm concerned it's useless.Save your money and pick the brains of the guys on this forum.

That old of truck you might have a 4 x4 shift cable that has stretched. Disconnect 4x4 shift cable on trans. and see if you can feel it going into 4x4 by hand. You will need a pair of channel locks to shift it by hand. I don't think that model truck having front lock in hubs, has any micro switch. It's all manual.

I don't think the cable is the problem as he said the front drive shaft is turning but the axle shafts were not. Going to be something in the axle. Proly the actuator on the axle.

You may have to drive your truck in first gear with axle lock light on untill the sleeve in the front diff locks . Mine is a bit picky as well. Try putting in 4x4 on gravel road and turn wheel to the left and right untill you feel a slight "pop" of the diff engaging. P.S. axle lock only engages the front diff, it does not "lock it" Diff lock does lock the rear diff only.
    Hope some of this helps!

You need to be driving forward in first gear in 4x4 while turning the wheel to the left and right.

Tried 1st gear 4x4 swearving back & forth, no luck. I'm gessing I'm gonna have to pull tha front diff down & check tha vacuum lines going to tha accuator. Does anyone make a posi -lock like tha ones for trucks?

Don't no what this means but I jacked all four tires off tha ground put it 4wd, first gear, only back tires turned. Tapped front diff with a hammer & it must made that collar slide over & all tires pulled. Baker to 2wd & no front power, tap again & all 4 turn. Back to 2wd then shifted back into 4 we & didn't have to tap to it this time.

Good for you, for locating that problem. What you have there, is a seldom used 4WD system.
Now service it from the transfer case, forward. Don't neglect the rest of the truck; just a priority to service this problem.
Use "red&tacky" (grease) and GL-5 (gear oil). Don't forget the armor-all, for the 5 boots; "axle-lock" actuator.
A "needle injector" is required as well.

Pay someone else to do it wrong, or just learn the ropes and get it done right.

NOT IN THE TRANSMISSION/ TRANSFER CASE GL-4 only for the trans. GL-4 is more compatible with yellow metals ( brass bushings )

Thanks for all yalls help. Can you recommended a good lift kit, 2 or 3 inches?

do not go over 2" without dropping front diff or you will end up with one pooched truck. Dont know who makes them now but get one that you can adjust camber on. Crossroads style lift is what I had.
