As I have received so much help from this forum, I felt it would be a good idea to post a few photos of the journey so far. It has been something of an emotional roller coaster. First, (I hope) here is the car I thought I had bought.
Here is what arrived. It was very shabby, but the main problem was that neither roof worked. Time passed and eight weeks overdue, a lot of emotional outpourings, and a lot of T cut, Here is what I collected. At any speed above 50 the temperature went off scale and it had to have a long rest. Then around town it cooked too. Replaced the thermostat and solved the round town problems and started on trying to sort motorway speed.
It occurred to me, and others, that those nice people at Subaru had designed a front with a radiator grill in it, and that had clearly been an aesthetic anathema to the customisers in Japan. I rather reluctantly took a hole saw and file to the front. I realigned the number plate. I can now drive for a little longer at 60mph, but there will suddenly be a lurch in the temperature and the needle goes off the scale. turning the heater on brings it rapidly down, but it does get warm inside, this weather!
Meantime I've attacked the inside with some serious elbow grease and added some 'veneer' to the dashboard.
I still haven't figured out the cooling system in the Domingo. There's two radiators up front above the 4wd transfer case, one of which looks like an A/C intercooler. But there's also a third radiator behind the spare tire, which is fed by an exhaust fan above and a little rubber air scoop underneath! So which of the two radiators are for engine cooling? Both?
The 'veneer' is a 3-M Vinyl called Di-Noc. It comes in a huge variety of finishes........... as long as you are prepared to by 100meters! By the foot the choice is more limited but it is out there and after some practice it can be persuaded to conform to quite sharp curves using a heat gun. Get the surface it's going on quite smooth. The plastic dash finish is fine, but the ply I used for the lid in the centre was not really smooth enough. Look on it as a dress rehearsal. Fay
I found a Subaru / Momo boss on line. I still have the box in the garage somewhere I will try and dig it out. Very straightforward. Try here:- http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motor...s/Momo_Steering_Wheel_Boss_Kits/1766/0/234818
Thanks. It's easy to look for a website but I can't find the model that fits a sambar/Domingo. Most sites don't even have our vans on the list. It will be great if you can dig out the box and let me know.
Right, I have found the box. It is a Momo hub. The label has the following numbers:- 12115117396 Mozzi Hub K7306 (bar code) 8 024055 005003 It might be the same as supplied for a Justy, as the torque settings listed inside only have a setting for the Justy under Subaru. Hope this helps. I have tried to backtrack through my internet purchase, I beleive it came from Rock Shore automotive. I will try and check, hope this helps, fay
Caring? As long as he behaves himself, possibly. Competent? I sometimes fumble my way through, not sure about competent.. Still haven't got on top of the cooling problems. Tick over and round town, runs fine. On a motorway/freeway it runs for twenty minutes or so at 75/80 mph and then the temp goes off the dial. Turn on the heater for a few minutes and it comes down. Not competent enough to sort this one yet, but thank you for your kind words. fay
