FINALLY got to start tinkering on the truck today. Ive had it a little over a month but the Gf's car accident put it on the back burner. Unfortunatly it will also put making to many purchases for the truck at a minimun for now. BUT, Dang it felt good to start wrenching on this thing. I have done alot of different "projects" and this thing is looking to be the most user friendly one to work on. Cant believe how many bolts are 12mm,lol....So anyways...

    Today I ...

-removed the seats and center council, this really opened things up!!!
-removed the fan,or what was left of it
    - pulled the radiator,also junk
-removed as many burnt wires as I could
-removed the carb, Im afraid this will need to be replaced.:frustration:
-removed the top half of the timing belt cover ,belt looks ok, but will most likley replace it.
-removed the altenator, also looks to be junk
-distributor ,looks pretty rough, prolly gonna replace???
    -removed the coil,also toast

So curiousity got the best of me and I hooked up my jumper pack to the starter...Spins over, sounds like it has good compression, but a compression test will be done before I spend any money...Im gonna do a tally and see how much I "Think" its gonna cost. This may end up as a motor swap if its to costly.

    So,parts needed so far...
    -Radiator and shroud
    -all hoses
    -distributor cap and wires,possibly distributor
    -fan
    -timing belt cover
    -timing belt
    -carb
    -shifter cables
    -throttle cable
    -altenator
    -assuming valve cover gasket

It had a fire that burned pretty much anything flamable around the engine. I bought it that way...It came with a wiring harness for 1500.00

Well I Have a distributor, Cap and Rotor on the way. Going to go out and pull the radiator out of one of my old sportbikes this afternoon.Pretty sure its gonna work good, along with the electric fan... Also going to make a template to start fabing an intake to use a motorcyle carb on it. To dang many vacum lines on the factory carb set up,lol.

ya why make it complicated? do like the guys with the rat rods do. clean up the engine as much as possible and only put the vacuum lines in that you need to.

I'm very familiar with the carb I'm gonna try, I run the same ones on my drag quad..the intake I modded for it gained me 6 HP on the dyno. My stock carb is toast, burnt toast, lol. The altenator will be replaced with a gm alt I saved from my old race car. Right now I have more time than money since I'm not working while I'm tending to my gf.

Radiator is a little smaller than stock, but is thicker so I think it will be fine, if not My other bikes is bigger. Hose size is almost exactly the same, so that is good. Carb I had in mind is gonna need a thourough cleaning.... Spent awhile messing with stock carb, throttle shaft is locked up tight. Sprayed some more break free in it,see what happens. Might try boiling it to get it warmed up,might help??

Well my distributor cap came the other day and the distributor showed up today. LOL, just my luck, the distributor had a cap and rotor on it. Oh well, now I have a spare, just in case....maybe the used ones no good......carb projects looking easier every day. More on that soon.

Well I got to thinking about the rebuild it idea....Took mine all apart and cleaned it up. Disassembled the "new" one and all the parts were a perfect fit into mine. I have it all back in one piece, but I have a question. Anyone know what the large nipple on the side of the distributor is for? the new one didnt have it .Its not the Vaccum advance... Ill get pics up of it soon. Do I need it or can I just bypass it with a nipple cap.

That is just a breather hose for the dist. body..same basic function as the one in the cap....gasses can build up in the dist. body ozone builds up as well from all the electrical activity, and at worst can explode and blow the dizzy apart.....I had a VW bug in high school that would blow the dist cap off at least once a week and never knew why.....I would clip it back on and it was fine for another week or so...years later I found out why:)

Yah its wierd, Im usually pretty gung ho to get projects like this going, but its kinda my "release" since the accident. No hurry, but I definetly would like it usable for icefishing this coming winter.
