Found two exhaust ports nearly closed due to carbon build up.

wow:eek:..that's one of those barely believable "before" pics that you see on fuel system cleaner bottles...never seen that much carbon build up before, amazing it ran at all... betting the catalytic conv. isn't gonna be pretty either....ty for the parts list..good luck on the rebuild

    fupa,
the wife waited around while I cleaned the head hoping for a diamond to fall out. Before tear down, the amount of pressure coming out of the exhaust was minimal. Now we know why. Yes the cat is plugged. I'm in the proccess of cutting up the exhaust to see if I can salvage any of it. I noticed the distributor was burried to one side, bad.

All bolt holes and studs have been cleaned using taps and dies. I painted the engine using a military green shade engine enamel.

Wow! You have been busy! It is looking really good, I like the green. This thing is going to feel like it has a V-8 in it after your done, and it should last forever!

    erixun,
I'm trying to make time to work on it, but other things keep eating up my free time. My wifes heater core went out, 3 weeks ago, in her GTI-8hrs of work, brothers truck axle blew up, two weeks ago, searching for parts, and his GTI water pump shaft broke last night. Not to mention, my GTIs power steering just started leaking two weeks ago, then my F350s horn went off constantly due to the local freeze. Along with delivering the Hijet to my father. Now I have to travel 2hrs to change a water pump and hope he didn't fry the head. I'll do that after work. Some guys get all the luck. If I had more time, I would have jerked the trans/motor and cleaned/painted where needed

    txhunter,
I hope it runs as well as projected.

I know what you mean, I was trying to load my truck up for a local trip up the canyon for my days off... but today I get to rip out my wifes squirrel cage (the one in her car guys.... not the one we all know we mean:D) and put on new shocks... I guess since I am in there messing with the heater fan, I ought to change the oil and spark plugs etc, its way over due. Too bad we all couldnt win the lottery and just play with the trucks all day...

Your project looks good, and I should probably do the same to my truck one day. Those pics of your plugged up ports scared my personal ports wide open, if ya know what I mean... I am sure mine have a bunch of build up as well. Keep us posted with pics as you go along and get the time to tinker. Nice post so far!

Cleaned up the intake, oil pan, valve cover last night. After soaking the exhaust manifold in Berrymans cleaner for three days and using a power washer on it, there is too much carbon still coating the inside. I'm going to use a sandblaster on it this weekend. I left the blaster at my parents to work on their horse trailer.

Someone in a prior posting, posted a mini with a "stainless steel" bed, that's what I may go for in the future. I'll sandblast the taillamp frame and coat the bare metal with etching primer, as a test before deciding.

Sensors in first picture: pcv valve, engine temp sensor, vac. supply port, EGR valve, temp activated valve?, and ported vac. switch

Have you tried kerosene on the Ex. manifold?? I've had good results using it in the past..never had to deal with the deposits you're fighting with though...looking good..never seen that colour duplicolor engine enamel...looks cool...excellent write up:pop:

    fupa,
Good idea, I haven't tried kerosene, I may if the sandblaster doesn't do the job.

Well, I was working underneath the Mits and thought, screw it just pull the damn motor/trans and clean it right. The motor has everything off of it, making that lighter to pull out. So, I disconnected the trans from the motor, removed rear transfercase frame mounts and pulled the trans. The motor wobbled, due to missing rear support. Removed the two lower motor mount nuts and pushed the motor up on one side to check its weight, then removed it. With the trans out, I'll be checking seals and clutch for wear, along with replacing transfercase vacuum lines.

The new plan is to push the truck out of the garage and power wash everything. I'll apply Gunk cleaner if needed.

I didn't have much time last night to work on the Mits, due to picking up a rear axle for my brothers truck. I cleaned up the trans(engine degreaser, power washer, and brake cleaner) and took pictures of the mounts/bolts/switches before painting. I noticed the vent tube on these vehicles is just a rubber cap, for some of you that drive off-road "mudding", I would get some fuel line and route it up high from the vent port, above any water line that you may travel through.

I only had time this past weekend to sandblast a few parts, after repairing my brothers rear axle(Saturday) and installing a belt tensioner, thankfully, on his GTI(Sunday). I'll post after sandblast pics later.

I didn't have the energy to sandblast the inside of the cat. with a fine media, but you can now see through it. I hope to prime and power wash the underside of the Mits. this evening.

My parents neighbors Bull Mastif, Patton, came by for a visit while I was working.

had to use my plasma cutter to remove the exhaust studs from the cat. Installed the exhaust manifold and new CV boots this weekend and measured for new exhaust hardware and rear shocks.

    Mits info is magnificent!

Your pix and information are great!. Had my '94 for over 5 years, now needing more TLC. Your info is right on the money. I'll add that missing fuel filter # on your list NAPA # 23001 and # 3001 work with tight hose barbs. The GMB guys are tops also! Thanks again.
