    Hey guys,

What GPS unit do you recommend? I am just wanting one so that I can see my actual speeds without trying to convert in my head.
I am looking into the TomTom ones at radio shack.

I have a Garmin NUVI. I would recommend it to anyone. My sister bought a Tom Tom and didn't like it. Took it back and bought a Garmin. One reason is their customer service is great. After 2 years my Garmin stopped working, I called tech support and the guy said send it in and well give you a new one. Didn't even care that it wasn't under warranty. Sent it in and got a new one in a week.

    impressive to hear.
I'm thinking about the low-end tomtom for $97. I only need this for the speedometer and don't want to spend over $100.
My Dodge has an in-dash DVD/gps by JVC that I use for when I really need to find something.

I'll research the Garmins and see the price of the cheapest one they have.

In that case get whatever is cheapest. I have to say though... It was the best customer service I have ever recieved in my life. It was kind of funny because after I got off the phone I just sat there asking myself "Did that really just happen?"

Not sure about the other brands but the Garmin does have a nice dashboard display for this type of use. Speed, Compass, Trip ODO

Ooo yeah, that is an awesome display. I know that brand has been in the gps business forever (even makes plane gps systems).
So I'm sure that is a great navigation system.

I ended up going with the cheaper deal though. Not a huge screen or anything, but seeing that it will be right in front of me, I think it'll work out just fine. I'm excited about it.
Here is the link to what I ordered:
    http://www.amazon.com/TomTom-ONE-3-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234587498&sr=8-1

I'll probably post photos someday when it comes in.

I've got a Garmin NĂ¼vi 250W - picked it up (refurbished) for $110 or so.

You can change the avatar to a slice of pizza... which is awesome.

And... uhh... a cannon. I really have nothing to contribute here. :D

I've been using mine as the main speedometer in my Previa. The dash lights stopped working a while ago, so I just suction-cupped the Garmin to the plastic covering my dials. :D

Just got my TomTom in today and love it. Works great! Surprisingly has all my local restaurants already listed.

Anyways, as I said, the main reason was to have a speedometer that was in MPH.
I was surprised by the fact that my truck's speedometer is off. (stock Daihatsu with stock wheels/tires) When I am going 80kmh I am really going 45mph.
And when the truck reads 100kmh, I am really going 55mph.
So yeah, I figured this truck's speedometer would have been a little more accurate seeing its age and that it is stock.
So I believe everyone with a mini-truck on the road should get a gps for the speedometer just so that they will be able to go the correct speeds.

So I'm glad I got this thing so I won't be killed on the road! :)

  12. Coming around again Feb 19 2011 - current GPS/nav units

    Hi Guys,

I'm up in the air on a gps/navigation unit - move back and fro from mini-truck to family van. Garmin and Tom Tom are the brands but I'm in a spin on which/model in either one. I'm tipping towards the Tom because it appears the updates/maps etc are lifetime and not costly like Garmin.

I tried out a Garmin (parents), don't know what model ... but the first thing that popped out at me was ... it did not speak the street name to turn on. I found that to be a pain when in high traffic situations and paying attention to signs/lanes/traffic. I liked the speed indicator and speed limit sign change. Also told, on the paticular model that the map updates are spendy, believe you get two free or one free. Sorry, I don't have the model handy ... I'll get that soon.

Price range would be around or just above $100. Figure someone who has tried out both for a period of time may filter down the model/brand list. What model would you guys recommend - duribility, reliability, and feature set?

  14. T&H...appears thats a spendy little bugger IMHO  granted, I ran a search on Amazon

Are you guys finding better deals from a reliable source other that Amazon?

The spendier units speak the street names. def a nice feature. one feature i have I don't really care for is the FM modulator, doesn't work worth a damn.

  18. I'm sticking around a 100 bucks. Seems Garmin ranks a bit higher than the TomTom. They have units that speak the entire street name which I see that as a big plus. Updates should not be spendy - actually they should be included in the price of the unit - at least some basic continued service.

Does not appear I'll get anything terrible between these two brands. Just like these mini-trucks - pick one :)

i used garmin 276c and nuvi.
i would say nuvi255w is ok it speaks street names and record the tracks. very useful especially when your out in the wild and dont know where to turn back, there is an option in the setting to follow the track.
you can change the vehicle icon too at garmin garage http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/ and change the voice too.:D
