Squeal or whine at start up on '92 Atcy

    Sounds like a belt or something. Forgive me for my ignorance as I don't know jack crap about automobiles. Started this weekend at hunting camp. It just does this on start up and after 30 seconds or so it goes away.

    Thoughts?

    I would guess that it's weather related, it being cold. It's more than likely a belt slipping. I'd replace the belt, & spray it with the belt slip stuff until then.

    Mine's been doing exactly the same thing...seems more prevalent in damp weather. I strongly suspect it's a pilot bearing or release bearing. I'm going to pull it apart soon and check it out and will post what I find.

    squeeling on cold start is a common belt slip....either too loose,too tight or old and hard and needs a bit of warmth to get moving happily

    I'm quite certain my noise is clutch related. Sometimes stabbing the clutch a couple times will make the noise disappear. Other times it refuses to subside until you've driven the truck a couple hundred feet. And in some instances, even that doesn't cure it. But I discovered in those cases, I can get the noise to go away by coming to a complete stop and attempting to take off in 3rd or even 4th gear.

    My Acty has 96000 km on it and the service manual recommends replacing the clutch and timing belt at 100000 km. So a few months ago, I ordered a clutch, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, distributor cap, rotor and plug wires for it. I am now in the process of removing the engine so that I can replace all these items with the engine on the bench instead of trying to fight with doing it all in the chassis. The manual makes engine removal sound real simple, but believe me, there's alot more involved than the manual makes you think.

    I've now finished installing the new clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and release bearing and the noise has completely disappeared. I'm not certain which of these clutch components was responsible for the noise I was hearing because all 4 items appeared to be in reasonably good condition, but I'm just happy the embarassing sound is no longer there.
