the 4wd low went out on my 92 jumbo high range works fine any ideas what could be wrong? were is the switch that kicks it in when you pull the lever in to low range

The switch is the high low lever in the cab. The lever moves the shaft in the gear box that enables it to go into h/L. Sounds like something inside trans. came apart, fell off, broke ??
Should have a inspection plate on passenger side trans. with 4 bolts. Take the plate off and look inside and see if something is wrong. Might get a small mirror to help you see in there. Have someone else move lever inside cab into high/low while you look around.
Is it making any odd noise? Can you feel anything from cab lever when you go into low?

Just to clarify. Are you saying that your dash light comes on when you engage the 4WD button on your range shift lever in 4H and does not come on when the lever is in 4L ? This sounds odd since the actuator on the front axle is engaged by the push button switch operation regardless of whether it is in H or L.

I will give you my best guess on two likely causes.
    1) The cable attachment on the top, rear of the transmission has become loose and is not allowing the lever to make a full stroke. If you have two people, have one person move the lever from hi to low and see if the lever is moving far enough back to engage 4L. If you want you could remove the cable attachment and move the rear lever by hand to see if the light will come on.
    2) It is an internal problem (loose or broken lever inside) that is not contacting the electrical switch( located on the RH rear top) of the transmission housing.

When the system is properly functioning you should be able to look under your drivers side seat and while moving the lever with the 4WD switch on the lever on and watch the actuator engage in 4H release in N and engage again in 4L. The dash light should be lit up accordingly. (While running)

On the s83 the 4wd is automatically engaged when shifted into 4 lo...you can't run in low range with 4wd off like you can in hi range.(at least mine and the other s83 I've driven are set up that way but I may be wrong) Some thing is wonky in the transfer case as trax pointed out..there should be a switch is the transfer case that activates the front diff when 4 lo is engaged (I'm assuming)

    4low not working

i tracked it down to the transfercase switch is it the one that has 4 wires coming out of it? or the 2wire
