unfortunately the answer is yes...among many other things...don't buy any parts or replace anything until you have checked all the free stuff first..My rule is to start with the simplest and work my way toward the most time consuming possibilities...we have all at some time replaced a ton of parts trying to solve a problem only to find the gas tank is empty. Start with the 3 basics..is fuel getting to the carb...remove a plug and check for spark while cranking...is the air filter or intake blocked...check the vacuum lines and adjust the valves...check the electrical connections on the fuel cutoff solenoids...your hijet has a vacuum operated flap in the airbox that need to be switched over from summer to winter(a very odd set up but simple if you know about it)...the vacuum line needs to be connected at the filter box intake in the winter and unhooked and plugged for the summer (the flap is in the rubber hose between the frame and the filter box)...pull off the hose to the frame and you can see inside the flap valve ,it needs to be closed while running (will open when truck is shut off)in the winter or too much cold air will get in.....hope this helps

sounds like ignition coil are you sure it is good? do you mean the spark just up and quits ?(when it does spark is it blueish yellow..should be nice and bluewhite) fouled plugs are another poor spark indicator..if they are all fouled it has to be something other than wires as they won't all go bad at the same time though the main coil wire to the cap could be bad....could also be cap and rotor as you say..they are simple enough to check

could be a bad wire from the ignition to the coil as well

Don't mean to hijack thread, but I didn't know this. I didn't do this and my Hijet works fine summer and winter. Started up fine a couple of weeks ago at -27c.
Is this a important thing to do, or do only if having problems? Thanks

Mine was in winter mode all summer as well...I only found out about it after it was cold out so never tried the summer setting ...I guess I won't know till it warms up...it will prob free up some power in the warm weather...it was also not very hot this past summer....I suspect in areas where it gets really hot you could see some vapour lock if you left it in the winter setting

I hope this is the right place to post this. I have a 1990 Daihatsu Hyjet. It fouls the plugs fairly quickly and then won't start until I clean or replace them. I've gone through the basic tune up- cap&rotor, set valves, fuel filter, air filter, wires are good. The spark seems weak to me, yellowish instead of blue. I'm ready to try a coil. Any suggestions on where to get one. Thanks!

    Hey fupa

This is the first I've heard of this... does a 93 suzuki have the same configuration?

take the coil off and head to the wrecking yard to match it with something...suzuki,toyota etc, almost any coil will work they are kinda like batteries in that they are different shapes/sizes but do the same thing...

Z not sure if your zuk is the same

Thanks for the coil info. Mine has a plug-in end for the primary wiring. Do I just splice the wires if I can't find one with the same plug?

Tex, thanks for the info. Mine is electronic ignition, no points. Do I need the external resistor type or the interior resistor type? Or is that an issue with electronic ignition?

Look at your coil ... If there is a resistor (white in color) on top of the coil .. then you will have a resistor. However, most electronic ignitions are 12v with no resistor.

Either way the Accel coil would still work ... with points or elec ignition - with or without resistors.

This is what I have in mine and it made a difference.
