:frustration:I have a 97 carry that I just recently bought. I have noticed that when I start it up (I live in Florida) morning, noon or night it smokes white thick smoke for about 15 mins while driving it, then clears up. but when you let the mini idel for a short or long time it starts smoking agin for a while, while driving. Then I noticed the other day that it gets hard to start some times, you have to turn the key to start it and keep the gas pedel pushed all the way down to get it going. Any help would be helpful!!!!!!!!!!!! the truck also seems to have no power in gears 3 through 5. Changed the plugs, air filter, oil, tranny fluids and still no luck. The truck has appx. 90,000 km = 50,000 US miles on it and seems to be in good shape. I also have tried the Sea Foam trick, helped a little. "Thinking it may be carb and/or may need to advance the timing.:frustration:

a few things to check...pcv valve...coolant level, if you aren't loosing coolant then it is prob the pcv...have you adjusted your valves? In very odd instances I have seen a brake booster suck brake fluid into the manifold ..so check brake fluid just to be safe. Good luck keep us posted

Thick white smoke - compression test

Swampdonkey, Welcome to the forum. Where in Florida?

First, white thick smoke gets me to thinking head/head gasket. If so, you would prob be losing some coolant and poss having coolant contaminated oil. I would suggest you do a compression check. Here is a quick down and dirty from my mits manual:

Also it helps for continuity purposes to post a problem in only one thread (keeps all the responses in one place).

Post back your compression numbers..........later, slim

Update on 97 carry smoke every where

    Update on my mini problems!!!!!
I cleaned the rotor and (all) contacts, put new plugs in, checked all the SP wires, removed the air intake box and sprayed Sea Foam "Deep Creep" in the throat of the card and let is soak for appx. 15 minutes.
Replaced the air box, removed the hose on the fuel pump side that draws the gas in from the fuel filter and placed it in a can of Sea Foam and started her up!!!!
Ran like crap but sucked the whole can of Sea Foam up into the fuel system.

Replace the hose back on the filter, put a half can of sea Foam in fuel tank and drove the mini to warm her up. Then I advanced the timing 4* TDC, adjusted the Air/Mixture and adjusted the Ideal speed, and guess what???

She runs like a new truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone on here that has posted help info and all that you do.. After reading post after post and compiling info in my head, I set out to fix my MINI and I did..... Many Thanks to ALL and Merry Christmas and
