anyone successfully remove the brake drum of one of these? There is no adjuster for the brake pads like a normal car that allows you to loosen the brakes and slide the drum off? Banging on it with a rubber mallet has not gotten me where I need to be?

Beat it harder. These are self adjusting brakes. Mine is a 2000 Suzuki. One drum tends to hang a little but the other slips off fine.

Not trying to be smart but it also helps if the parking brake is off.

    there is a way

In my recent trials I had one drum that would not let go even with the hand brake off. There are two threaded holes in the drum (at least on a 1990) you can screw a bolt into (a 13 or 14 mm I think). From there you can either use them to pull/pry against or, if you are careful, just keep running them in until you hit the backing plate and keep going.

I used quite a bid of PB Blaster...ended up having to let it soak for quite some time. Oh, and used a big hammer!!
