I always manage to find the most difficult way, how simple? Mine did have a rusty paper-clip in the harness, I heard afterwards this was probably a "fooler".

yup... I've seen the paperclip or jumper wires on the pigtail to the transmission. worked on a few of mine at a golfcourse in the 80's.

    mini speed problem

Could you tell me the easy way in which to fix my problem with the speed limiter. Would appreciate any help I could get. The solenoid thing sounds a little complicated to me.

Appreciate any info you can give me. , Jim

Do you know if it is locked in to low range? if not locked in low and still only 25mph you can look for the pigtail that runs to the speed sensor on the transmission and jump the wires together that lead to the sensor. There should be two pairs of wires back there. one is for the reverse lamp. The other should be the speed sensor.

This is a two wheel drive pickup. I doubt if there is a low range. Are you talking about the sensor under the dash?? I'm not familiar with speed sensor on the transmission.
There is a sensor under the glove box that has a switch on it but nothing happens when I change it.

I know in maunal transmissions the two wheel drives often have a low/ high range, it will be a Low/High lever directly behind the stick shift, a short little lever next to the parking brake. If you pull the lever all the way up you can feel it engage with a light "clunk", if you pull it up and it resists the c-clip/ snap ring is installed in the tranny. I would reccomend checking this first.

There is no shifter for a low high range in my truck. Just an emergency brake and the regular four speed shifter.

Assuming all four gears work, I would bet jumping the sensor on the tranny would give you what you are looking for.

Does your center console look like this?? See between the shifter and e-brake there is another handle that's pulled up? Thats the hi/low/Neutral select in High Gear.

My interior is identical to the inside of this mini accept there is no high low shifter in mine. I wished there was for an easy fix. Where the high low shifter is in this truck I have nothing. Not even where it might have been at one time. What year is this truck you have? My truck is a 1991 s80. Maybe there is a high low box under neath of mine. Today I will try and send some pics of my truck.

havman: I see you have posted a couple of times that your truck is a 2wd.
It might be that there was some 4wds that were limited to 2wd drive by lock outs in the transfer case.
These trucks can be converted back to 4wd by the procedures mentioned.

If your truck does not have a front drive shaft and drive axles to the front wheels then yours is indeed a 2wd.
Also for reference the transfer case is at the very back of the transmission right where the driveshaft to the rear wheels hooks up.
If your transmission just tapers back to the rear driveshaft then you don't have a transfercase for the 4wd.

i think the biggest question that should be answered is if your truck will really turn some RPM's or if it falls flat on it's face at 25mph. if it's reving good but doesn't have the gears to go any faster then you need to address the hi/low issue. if you have the gears to go faster but feel it just "fall on it's face" at 25mph you need to address the speed governer. You maybe correct. It just feels like the fuel shuts off at about 25 or 30 mph. Seem like it could go faster. You can slow down and restart the truck with the clutch or the starter. This why I think that the fuel is shutting off.

yep that's a speed limiter! it cuts off fuel supply i think. that's why you have to crosswire the sensor on the trans or removed the solenoids on the carb. good luck.

    Thanks Mighty Milt.
I,ll have to check into the speed limiter. Would this be on the trans or high low gear box?

Not saying all Daihatsu's but I have had a 2 wheel drive (no front diff.) 2x2 get it, Daihatsu left hand drive early 1990's model. It had a transfer case but no front drive shaft nor front cv drive line. It was possible on this truck to shift it into high range. You have to pull the clip in the trans. and shift it by hand under the truck. There is a plate with 4 bolts on the drivers side of trans. Take the plate off and with 8'' long needle nose pull the clip on the shifter rod. Then by hand on top of trans. move it into high range. If you wanted to go back to low range you got to get under truck again and shift by hand back to low. There is no extra shifter in the cab. On top of that you follow the speed cable to trans. and it will screw into a little box that has a wire on it. That box screws into the trans. Disconnect the box and screw speed cable directly into trans. by passing the box. Leave the wire hooked to the box and secure the box up on the frame somewhere. Leave the wire hooked up to box. This will by pass the 25 mph shut off valve on carb.
On some left hand drive Daihatsu's 4x4's, in the cab there is a extra shifter. It only shows "D"/"N". 4x4 button will be on the dash. This truck comes into the states with trans. in low range. There is no way to shift it into high range unless you you do the above(pull the clip). But on this model once you remove the clip there is enough room on the shifter indide of truck to move past the "N" indicator and go into high range. So, now it is possible for this truck to be shifted in and out of high/low from inside of truck.
With all that said I now need a cold refreshment.

This is how the clip looks.

It is in the top right of the picture in the trans case. You'll need a 10-12 inch long needle nose plier and a strong magnet tipped pointer. If you aren't sure of what you're doing I'd advise that you have it professionally done. If you drop the clip... thats trouble. Goodluck.:pop:

    Transfer Case Shifter Clip Question

Thanks for the photos of the transfer case shifter clip gumballf355. Would that photo have been taken from the cover plate on the TOP of the transfer case where I asume a pto would bolt up? And on the pto issue has anyone ever heard of one available for a 1992 Lefty 4x4 Dump? Thanks.

PTO models are out there. Ive only seen a picture of one. The pto was hooked up to a generator and the truck had outlets in the back of bed. How cool is that. Not sure where I saw it might have seen it here on this site somewhere. It was a long time ago.

Can someone give me an idea please. I have a 91 Diahatsu left hand drive. I'm trying to get the dang thing to shift into high range. I've removed the plate on the left side of the transfer case and found the "C" clip and removed it. It still doesn't move into high range. Either by the shifter or removing the shifter cable and doing it manually. Did I possibly get the wrong "C" clip? Thanx for any help!

You might need someone up top moving the transfer shift lever from the down position (in mine it was labeled "D") and pulling up on it (again mine was labeled "N") to see if you pulled the right clip. I had my wife move mine back and forth till I found the slide yoke that was moving and seen the clip. After that it was easy, I have done a '91 and a '92. The picture that Gumball has posted on here shows the clip.

So "louannfd1" there is more than one clip? The clip in mine did appear to be more to the left side of the opening but was the only one I could see. There looks like there is only one slide yoke. I did move the shift lever back and forth and did have to make sure it was down all the way to get the clip out. When it was in the up (neutral) position the slide was sitting right on the "C" clip. I thought maybe the gears were not meshing right. I'll look again tomorrow. Let me know if there is more than one clip please. Thanx!

Ok....got the clip out and actually it was a breeze after talking with Leon at Daihatsu Help. This guy is a big help to anybody that has a question. After talking with people on this site (thank you all), I chatted with Leon and the way he does it is easy and you can see what your doing. He just uses a good stiff wire and puts a small 90 degree bend on the end and reaches in and hooks the "E" clip, then slide a telescoping magnet up along side the wire and when you pull the clip it sticks to the magnet. Although mine missed the magnet I fished around the top of the gears with the magnet and found the clip. Just make the wire long enough that you can crouch down outside the truck and look in with a flashlight and you can see perfectly to hook the "E" clip. Worked better for me in a dark area so the flashlight made things more visible. Hope this helps anybody else trying to do this. Special thanx to Leon. He's awesome!!!!! If I can help e-mail me: wingnutbrill@yahoo.com

What type of wire did you use?
    A coat hanger?
    Thanks,

Actually it was a little bit smaller diameter wire but needs to be stiff because the "E" clip does come out a little bit hard. Maybe something like a choke cable. Feel free to give me a call 517-414-1357
