I have a few left hand drive Hijets, and wondered if they were something special? They are all 2wd. Also wondered if there were any way to convert to 4wd on one of them. Thanks for any info.

2wd was standard for the units imported for use in northern america as well as all the units purchased by the military branches. most, if not all, are 2wd and typically limited to only 25mph unless someone has already made necessary modifications to make them faster. if you run a search on this site there are several threads about how to modify them to run faster than 25mph. some have an electrical speed limiter, others are locked in low range in the transfer case. and yes, even the 2wd units have a transfer case - although i don't think it has the provision to add the front drive shaft.

when you ask is there a way to convert it to 4wd... i say "where there's a will there's a way".

    good luck.

  3. LHD Daihatsu Hijet - Built in the US

    Zukgod,

What most people do not know is that Daihatsu had a plant in the United States from 1986~1996 and built LHD 2WD and 4WD Hijets, models S80 and S81 respectively. Your serial number is JDA000S8000xxxxxx. In addition to Japanese mini trucks, we've also been selling parts for these Hijets for the last 2 years.

Daihatsu tried forever to get them legalized for road use but faced opposition by government regulations and could only sell them to private facilities including government. (The irony) After 1996 they shut down and went back home. The company was then called Daihatsu America!

Keep an eye on our new information website MiniTruckCentral as we will be uploading a lot of information on these US built Hijets including a Service Manual which, incidentally, is in English!
