"GL5 is a different spec, and is not 'backwards compatible' with GL4.

GL5 gear oil is a lubricant with very high extreme pressure performance needed for Hypoid gears where sliding and rolling contacts operate under very high loadings. This is achieved by incorporating high concentration of sulfurized additives. The downside to such high sulfur in oil is it tends to corrode yellow metals, so can ruin parts like brass synchronizers and some bushings. So any equipment needing GL5 performance is designed taking this limitation of the lubricant into account.

GL4 oils are much more friendly to yellow metals, and so are used in equipment where such high load sliding-rolling contacts aren't present. The designers of such equipment aren't as limited in the use of brass parts. So the bottom line is that if your equipment calls for GL4 it probably doesn't need GL5 performance, and you may be asking for trouble down the line if you use a lube it wasn't designed for."

    Hi o8k
great list of stuff...only one thing that could find (not that i was looking :)) is the the mitsubishi (i have a 92) 90-98 bolt pattern is 114.3mm the 115mm you have listed is a ATV bolt pattern and for safety reasons trucks that are street legal should not use the 115mm ATV wheel bolt pattern.
    thanks for the time spent!!

Thanks, Ill make the needed updates... I would like to hear more about 115mm being a problem of safety though. My 92 Suzuiki has 115mm bolt pattern. Im not aware of any problems, seems to drive 60-70mph ok...

    Hi
the 115mm bolt pattern wheels you have on your truck are they off of another car or are they from a ATV dealer or a offroad mini truck site? the first thing you should know is ATV wheels are not DOT approved for street use, and i know some of the guys on the site are using ATV offroad tires, these also are not rated for street use and are only rated in most cases to 40mph's. one thing i would like to say is i am not standing on a soap box, i just want to make sure the right tires are used for the right condistions. so to be safe street tires and wheels should be use for street use for safety because all it would take is a crash of a mini truck on the highway with ATV tires and wheels on it to cause more trouble and unwanted attention we don't need, plus one of our guys getting hurt. i have been in the tire business for 15 years and i know tires, and i am just trying to help.
if anyone has questions about tires, feel free to contact me :)

Thanks for the information, good safety tip. I wouldn’t want to see anyone get hurt either. You bring up a valid point that has largely remained “un-spelled out” for lack of a better term in this forum (at least to the extend I could find). For example, lots of people looking for 13" and 14" Rims so they can buy street tires. However, your statement is confusing to me.
There is nothing mechanically unsafe about a rim with 115mm bolt spacing. I believe you mean most US manufactured 115mm bolt spacing rims are for ATVs which are not DOT approved and have a much lower design speed ceiling than DOT approved rims (for example 40mph).
To answer your question… None of the above, they are from the OEM and so are the tires (e.g. Suzuki). Both designed to safely carry the vehicle around at whatever speed it can lug itself.
    My first thought:
DOT's domain should in no way merge, conflict, or otherwise need be considered with that of an stock imported Kei Truck in the United States for the following reasons.
    1. They are considered off-road vehicles by customs and applicable import regulations.
    2. The importers are required to limit the vehicle speed to 25mph (one of the “applicable import regulations”).
My second thought:“IF” one where to modify their vehicle to go faster than 25mph. I then Huston, we may have a problem! Again good point and Buyer beware!
Bingo! Now we are getting there! 40mph is slower than a Kei truck can go if you yank that little governor off it (which by the way I would never suggest anyone do). So presuming someone removes this thing and slaps ATV tires on it (irrelevant of bolt pattern). Now ya got a speed mismatch on your hands and a safety problem.

This begs the question….Are the dealers doing this b4 they resell them??? Hrm… donno… I didn’t buy from one (nothing personal guys, anyways im gonna need parts right! hehehe)… if they are, I can clearly see your frustration. Hope they have good lawyers and/or were very clear in their vehicle sale disclosure statements.

Philosophically speaking, if anyone modifies something they buy from its stock configuration, they better know what they are doing or there will be unforeseen consequences. This is true for tires, rims, lifts, more horse power, and on and on….

In my case, I have stock Suzuki carry wheels and rims that came in a 115mm bolt pattern. I bought ATV rims and tires for it last week and will install them hopefully this week. I am fully aware that ATV wheels and tires have different speed ratings on them than DOT tires that im used to. I have contacted the manufacturers of my respective wheels and tires and asked they provide me with the design speed ceiling for the respective products. They have not yet gotten back to me.

    Hi o8k
i am glad to hear that you have stock wheels on your truck, i am a mitsu guy, and that's the bubble i am in, so not knowing that suzuki's bolt pattern is 115mm that's my bad :) i looked at ATV rim's when i first got my truck because i have ice raced quads in the past, and in the strait-a-ways i was well over 40 mph :D but checking the wheels out more for my truck i found that they are not for street use. all this info on these tires and wheels are not to mess up all the fun in mud in the state's, it's for us Canadian's (and some state's) who can drive free and clear on any highway, as you can see in my avitar, i am a street driver :D
one more thing you can ad to your list...tire shops have a tool that checks your bolt pattern if you are not sure what it is.

Good points. For example... The ATV ITP wheels I had on my truck were only rated for 350lbs per wheel. I know I exceeded that more than a few times. LOL

  16. o8k

    o8k Member

:sly: yikes, wonder if my rims are that rating too... :frustration:
    on another note...
I did hear back from the Maxxis people, and the tires are good to like 490lbs ea. which seemed low for a 6ply, but hey, who am i to question the manufacturer?

I got my tires (Maxxis Ceros 23x8x12) in yesterday, had em mounted, and installed them when i got home, did some driving around on them... Great flotation!!!! Huge lugs! WOW what a difference. Although the catalog had them lookin much less agressive than they ended up being. However, took a trip on the pavement with them too, just to see. I'm now less worried about driving with the ATV wheels over 40mph simply b/c they are soo loud and spongy on pavement, it isnt worth it. Squirly, loud, mushy. Better put, the danger is quite apparent, rather than silent =)

If i have to drive on street, i think ill run my stockers, toss the MAxxis wheels in the bed, and swap em out when i get to the dirt and vis versa (eventually just trailer the thing for longer trips). With the floor jack and impact wrench i have onboard, only takes about 3-4 minutes anyhow.

My only disapointment (and shame on me for not doing my homework better) is the overall load rating of the ATV rims/tires is lower than i wanted. And likely lower than the 350kg load rating on the bed + truck weight :frustration:

  17. greg0187

    greg0187 Moderator Staff Member

Yeah. I always had that load rating in my thoughts when I was driving. :D It will never leave you! LOL The handling went to crap after I added my Maxxis tires too. Very, very scary on the slightest curves above 30mph. Easy to drift into a ditch.

Ill call them today, i emailed them yesterday, and someone from carlisle tire replied. And the lady that replied appeared to be incompetent to me. Can only assume they are the same company.

EDIT:Well Calling yielded much better results. The technician said that they don't have an exact load specification (that he has anyways, im sure there is one, there is ALWAYs a load specification) but they are built to handle all ATV and UTVs on the market many of which reach 2000lbs GVRW. Again the topic of conversation was ITP Delta Steel rims.
