    Speed Limiter on Daihatsu Hijet

I finally got my gaskets, opened the transfer case, removed the e-clip, removed the small black box attached inline of the speedo cable, closed
everything up and we are flying. I can shift from low speed to high speed,
my speed is over 25 mph, I'll need to setup and external speedo to see how fast, my present one pins at 25.

Thanks for all the advise and pictures.

    Speed Limiter on Daihatsu Hijet

No, I removed it from the speedo cable next to the transfer case, follow the cable. The gaskets were about $60.00, call Bill White auto mall for price 800-333-5612, they carry oem parts.

you probably have a electronic limiter on the carb. Mine will go over 110 km in 5th gear easily.

    speedy

Greetings! :D I live in the Philippines and have a Scrum van. Its TWD, and from what I gather from all the post, the speed limiter is to keep you from operating your mini truck on roadways, is this correct? Like the old farm use only tags? I can understand why they don't want them on US hi ways, its a death trap! It is a golf cart that can go 100+ KPH ( mine is a turbo automatic) It has no front crash protection, and its gas tank is very easy to crack in a crash. Its great for here, if I get to 45 KPH I am on the express way! I wouldn't drive on US roads with all the SUV's and big block Ford and Chevy vehicles there.
Amy I correct in my assumption?

    speed limiter box

I have a 90 hijet left hand drive, which was produced for u.s. market, thus is equipped with a factory installed speed limiter. Once 25 mph is reached the fuel supply is temporarily interrupted. I too found this box behind the dashboard marked "speed control box". I pulled it loose from the wiring harness and the engine died. If this is the culprit then power to the fuel pump
is routed through here and would need to be "jumped out" if the harness is pulled loose from the box. The trick will be identifying the wires. there was about 8 to 10 wires hooked up to it. It seems to me that power to the fuel pump is routed through here and the box receives a signal from somewhere once 25 mph is reached which triggers an interruption of power until speed drops down to a certain number. I will do some more investigating and keep posted. If this aint it i will be looking for the speedometer cable and anything from there back to the carb. if i have to i will have the wife drive it while i crouch in the floorboard with the seat missing and watching the carb as it kicks out!

    speed limiter

90 hijet 2wd, 4spd manual. im going into 4th gear at about 22 mph. shortly thereafter my governor starts "governing". I can also get it to kick in while in 3rd gear. What is meant by low speed and high speed in reference to shifting?

    oh....

dang here i am typing away about speed limiters thinking there is a couple of guys out there somewhere reading this and writing there own responses, then i noticed that these other posts date back over a year! oh well. I just bought this truck and super excited, first toy i got since my bass boat 15 years ago. real eager to find and remove the governor

    Speed limiter

Now THAT is an interesting post - uninformative, incorrect, and has nothing to do with a speed limited Daihatsu - yet interesting. Please expound on this solution - inquiring minds want to know:rolleyes:

    mini operator,

Congrats on getting a minitruck and welcome to the forum.

Might want to check out this thread:

I think post #51 (by Trax and Horns) has the relevant info you're looking for.

Hope this helps and good luck on the governor..........later, slim:)

    speed limiter

ok, hope the image i'm attaching is included. Im thinking this is the speedo cable that screws into a little box which then screws into the transmission. So to overide the governor should i pull cable loose, pull the little box from the tranny, then hook the speedo cable directly to the tranny, and presto chango no more governor? low range/hi range

yeah i looked all over the tranny for an access plate to remove clip, but there is nothing there. But thats ok i like it geared low since im mainly offroad. im shifting into 4th at about 15-20mph but my speed limiter holds me back from going any faster. I know without that i should be able to get around 45mph top speed, which is plenty in these trucks.

I have a 91 and a 92 left hand drive, have bypassed both, all you have to do is wire the two wires together at TX, that stops it from dieing when you get to 25mph. The E Clip can be accessed two ways, one is a plate on your tx left hand side at about 11 o clock. Four bolts hold it on, this is used for PTO's that is the way I did it. the other is drop driveline and pull all the bolts on back of transmission. If you will research these forums as I did it is easy to do and it is nice to run 55mph when you want to or go to low side and run around 25. Have fun with your daihatsu.

    governor

thanks to all for leading me in the right direction in my crusade to bypass the governor on my daih. hijet! I found the little box hooked to the tranny with speedo cable plugged in. harness had wires going to another gadget on top of the tranny, and what looked to be a jumper already in place. So i just removed the box, kept all wiring intact, and tied cable directly into tranny. It did the trick! Speedometer only goes to 25, feels like im going about 40 or 45 at top speed and im geared out. I dont have an access plate on the tranny. im in the market for an axle with a locking rear end, so maybe if i find one i might look for that clip then.

    February 16, 2011.

I just took delivery of my 92 left hand drive truck.
It was previously a Parks Service vehicle for off road use.

Between the seats is a lever. "D" and "N"
When activated, it switches the truck into neutral or drive. You still have the neutral on the gear shift.

It is two wheel, has a low range gear, plus 1,2,&3 forward gears, and reverse.
The low range, is really really low speed.
    1st, is a little faster,
2nd will run you up to 15 or so, and really revs the engine.
3rd, you can start from a dead stop, and run up to 22mph on the speedometer.
then the engine starts dogging it, cutting out, until speed drops to 20 or so, then kicks back in.
In 3rd, you can feather it with your toe on the accelerator, and keep it running just inside its limit without it cutting out.
Cutting out feels like the spark or fuel has been interrupted.
The cutting out engine revs speed is maybe 3/4 the engine revs I can get in 1st or 2nd without the engine cutting out.

Leon at Daihatsu says I have the model with the speedo cable box, and a c-clip on the tranverse case.

Its too cold right now to get into it. But I expect, using the photos I've seen so far, and Leon's guidance to one remove the cable box from the speedo. Then figure out whether I'm disassembling the transfer case or entering through a port to get at the c-clip.

Leon says I should get someone to manipulate the "D"-"N" lever while I remove the c-clip.

It all sounds pretty easy and straight forward.

I've ordered street tires to replace the fronts which are literally thread bare.
I plan to license it either in Maryland, or Virginia, or North Carolina sometime.

For the time being, I am operating it locally without tags.
My brother's theory is that right now, limited as it is, its what he called a "Drunk's Ride."

Like a moped, it should require no licensing or license to operate along the shoulder lane of secondary roads.

I drove it home from the dealer. A distance of fifty miles. It used a gallon of gasoline. I passed three seperate cops, one State, two County, all waved a happy greeting to me as I chugged by.

Given the current eco-consciousness, I wasn't surprised not only by the cops but four or five other drivers who gave me the thumbs up when my midget truck was beside them at the stop lights.

As far as highway speeds are concerned, I have heard a lot of people tell me that these little trucks would be too dangerous at 60 or so mph. Maybe, maybe not.
I do know that my first new car when I was 22 was a Fiat Multipla wagon. It had twelve inch tires, and a 600cc engine. I tore up and down the super highways between Northern Virginia and the Jersey Coast at 50 to 65mph.
I never died. Not one time.

They license "smart cars" like its smart to spend $40,000.00 to buy 8.8 feet of car.
And the new generation of Fiats is soon to arrive as part of our newly enlightened investment in Chrysler Corp.

How far can kei trucks be behind them?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help you can offer.

Speedometer Cable secumbs to Nemo's skills

    2/20/2011.
Speedometer cable limiter was no match for my amazing mechanical skills.

I quickly located the cable on the right side of the vehicle, just in front of the rear tire easily accessible by lying down beside the truck.
It took five minutes to detach the cable from the box, the box from the transmission, then stretch and reconnect the cable directly to the transmission.
It took fifteen minutes to properly secure the box out of harm's way.

Back in the cab, I took my little rice burner out on the side streets in my neighborhood, and went through the gears.

New Top Speed, now around 40mph, with the engine wound higher than my ear tells me is good for the engine.
Taking my life in my hands, bumping along on worn out front treads which literally do bump where the thread hits the pavement, I drove it ten miles locally in traffic to enjoy the interruption free drive.

New Tires are still on their way. Somewhere out there in the infinite world of FedEx.
I took some pretty good photos of the speedometer rig if what has been posted isn't sufficient. It was exactly as they showed, though mine was rust free.
Next, another call to Leon to clear up whether my truck has an inspection port or requires a serious job of work on the transfer case to get at the c-clip.:pop::pop:

My truck feels like it needs another gear, did removing the speed limiter help this on yours??

  24. Captain Nemo

    Just the three

If yours is like mine, there are four gear positions.
    L = low speed.
    1 = well come on.
    2 = most moving starts.
    3 = every thing above 15 to 20mph.

According to my tachometer at 7,500 rpm, the truck is booking about 60mph.
I've red-lined mine at 7,500, but usually its running in the 5,k to 6,k range for most driving.
That seems awful fast but the engineers must have planned on it, otherwise why have the higher range?

Leon at Daihatsu says that the engine's valves are floating at anything over 3,500. But, I haven't noticed any problems other than what I have mentioned in my other posts.

And it is just remotely possible that I have my tack from Glow Shift incorrectly connected. I don't think so, but I've been known to be wrong.
