Engine starts fine. When I mash the gas the engine runs great, but when I let off the gas, when engine returns near idle speed, it shuts down. Any help???

    Thanks

If its a carb model and the idle is set correctly it could also be a clogged slow jet, fuel filter or even a failing fuel pump.

i agree that it may be an idle jet that's clogged but i have never seen a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump manifest it's self on the bottom end. typically a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump will only be able to provide the fuel necessary for low rpm motoring. it's typically on the big end where you will feel the motor start to lag or even fall on it's face because the fuel filter is so clogged it won't provide the volume necessary for high rpms.

I just went thru the same problem with my 1992 Hijet, cured the problem by adjusting try the throttle adjust screw first screw is on the right side of the carburetor on top if the float bowl.
email me & I'll send you a fuel system manual. grizhunter@windstream.net

    Hijet won't idle

    My 1996 2wd Diahatsu Hijet won't idle.
Does anyone have any advise. I don't even know if it is carbureted or throttle body fuel injected. I am leaning towards fuel injected since I can't see a float bowl. Can someone explain how to adjust the idle or what I should try.
    Thank-you

Had the same problem Saturday and my problem was the automatic choke sticking. I knew it had to be something simple because it was running good the day before. Gave it a good tap with the ole screwdriver and it lined out. I lubricated it up the best I could so hopefully it won't happen again any time soon.

will be very difficult to find a used fuel pump for that year truck.. must used parts laying around are from early and mid 90's trucks..

i have a mechanical fuel pump from a S83 Hijet. Not sure if it would fit your truck.. might want to ask fupabox or stuff99.

I wouldn't blame the fuel pump...if you have a mechanical pump it's job is to keep the float bowl filled and that's all..if you are dieing when you hit the throttle I would say it is either carb (dirty, accelerator pump,)vacuum hose leak or timing

if you mean engine oil..then 5w30 in cold weather...10w30 in the summer, 10w40 if it's real warm where you are

Hi Chickenman: Can you confirm if the fuel shutoff solenoid is working properly. If it is closed, the engine will start and run on the choke till warm, then it will shut off at idle. It will also run above idle, but will stumble and stop if at idle. Confirm if it is working by un pluging it and apply 12V across the terminals - you should be able to hear it click. Then plug it in and listen for it when turning the key on/off, or confirm voltage with a multi meter. If no sound/voltage, check your 10 amp fuses, as one of them powers this solenoid,

I have a 92 HiJet that I can't get to idle right after it warms up. Cold, it idles fine, but when it warms up, it will idle really fast, or when I try to adjust it slower, it will idle rough for a short time and then die. Then it won't start. Auto choke is working as it should, all vacuum lines have been replaced,(correctly). Truck used to run fine, but it sat awhile then it got to where it wouldn't start after it got warm, It left me stranded a couple of times and I parked it, now I'm trying to get it going again. Once I get it started, I can keep it running by using the accelerator. Thanks for any help!!

That's kinda what I figured. I ordered a new one. Just about as cheap as ordering a kit and spending time putting it in. Hope I can figure out how to hook the vac lines up since it won't have an auto choke.

Idle jet might be clogged or the idle solenoid isn’t working anymore

The problem is the idle solenoid. I found one very cheap from a 1987 Toyota FJ. Here is where I got mine .

I have a Kia Towner which is the same as Daihatsu Hijet from 1994 to 2000. Many parts are interchangeable between the two between the years mentioned above. I was having a lot of difficulties getting the truck to idle right coming to a stop, I got a new carburetor from EBay and the problem didn't go away. A few days later I figured out that the idle solenoid that goes on top of the carburetor was bad (I swapped it from the old carb to the new one because the one from EBay came without it) I started looking for one but it cost more $ than the new carburetor . Later I found one that looked very similar at an old Toyota's online store and got one for $14.95 . Put it to the truck and problem solved, Thanks GOD because it was driving me crazy. Oh I ordered a second one for my old carburetor since that was the problem of it. Here is the link https://cruisercorps.com/products/throttle-idle-solenoid

Thank you @ERINSON DURAN. I tried buying a new carburetor on ebay but it did not fit properly. My S80 does have the idle solenoid on the top and I will buy the one you referenced. It can't hurt to have newer parts! What carburetor did you buy?

The carburetor I bought from EBay is attached in the link below, and it should come with the idle solenoid. Make sure you adjust the ignition distributor since that was a major issue for me and I didn't know i have to put it in time.
