Well, it is official. My Daihatsu Hijet has finally found a new home, and I have received the previously agreed upon amount from Jason for handling it's sale. Thank you again Jason for helping me out. Last week, I also found a 1989 Nissan truck with only 68k miles on the odometer. It's a 3.0 V6 automatic, but still netted me 26.7mpg on the drive home from Sweetwater. The previous owner even put brand new tires and shocks on the truck before trading it in. The only thing that it needs is it's timing belt replaced in order to insure that it is not overdue, since they are scheduled for replacement at 60k, and I cannot get any verification from any Nissan dealer if it has been done or not. When those parts come in, I'll perform the work myself, and she'll be ready to be put to work.

The Nissan is a comprimise between the Kei and a full size, but with the EPA performing it's typical government criminal ineptitude and overreaching of their authority, I unfortunately do not see another kei in my future. Hopefully, sanity will ultimately prevail, and sentient thought occur in the halls of the feds, but I won't hold my breath. With a schedule that has me balancing a full time job, with a full time class schedule for college, I simply don't have the free time to be a pain in the *** to my Reps and Senators on the issue. I'll still check in on occasion to see how it's progressing, but I will be mostly moving on to concentrate on getting my required degree and certifications, so that I can make my needed career changes.

Here are a few pics of the little red beast. :D

I would have preferred a 4 cylinder 5 speed manual, but this truck was too good to pass up. I guess I'll just have to "get used to" having nearly 5 times the engine displacement of the Daihatsu. :D

This has been a fun place to visit and share thoughts on all things kei. It has been a great forum with lots of good and in some cases, VERY opinionated people. For now however, I must pursue other priorities. Thanks for the help for the times when my truck was misbehaving, and for the laughs with the crazy youtube videos of people doing impossible things with ther trucks.

Oh, and whoever is interested, I have a full size Ford F150 with 168k miles on it. It runs and drives extremely well, and I wouldn't hesitate to hop in it tomorrow and drive cross country. The first person to hand me $2,500 in cash, gets to own a VERY orange truck.

those are great trucks, my sister bought one brand new back in 89 and i was nice enough to be the first to crash it to make sure it was safe enough for her :D

not a bad compromise at all... the feds won't be knocking on your door telling you that it's not allowed on the roads, and with gas prices what they are today it won't break the bank filling it up.

good luck! it was good having you around.

    cheers

Sorry to see ya leave the community.
sometimes it is easier on the stress level to give up and not fight which may be a loss in the end for the little guy:frustration:
Better to sell when and if you can sometimes:)

Believe me, I am frustrated. Even if the state still had decided that they shouldn't have titled them, they should at least had the warewithall to suck it up for the ones that they did "in error" and let the owners continue to drive them. Since the state did what they did, it rendered the Hijet yet another expensive lawn ornament. If you were to see my place, you'll see where I simply don't have the space to collect large automotive lawn ornaments. My property simply isn't large enough to justify having it as a farm impliment either. Since I had a personal loan I was paying on, in which the money was used to buy the truck in the first place, it was a money loser to just let sit in the yard, and I needed to recoup that money to pay off it's note.

As I'm averaging 60 to 70 hours per week between work and school, I simply don't have the free time to spend, trying to fight the state and federal moffia. The Hijet was one of the coolest little vehicles that I've ever owned. My blood still boils when I think about the way I was treated by TXDOT on the title and registration.

Since I cannot tell you whether or not I'll have a job 3 to 6 months from now, let alone a year, I absolutely must keep a priority on school. If this wasn't the case, I'd happily join in the attempt to kick *** and take names on getting the state and feds off of their high horse regarding our trucks. Since I'm a bit high maintenance on such basics as food, a roof over my head, and a paycheck to pay for it, :D I simply must adjust my priorities accordingly. I won't be completely gone. My visits will just be few and far between, while I keep track on what ultimately happens with the EPA and future expansion of states who do make intelligent decisions, and allow their citizens to decide for themselves if a mini is right for them or not.

  5. Wolfman,

I appreciate your business and all the promotion you've done for the mini truck industry in North Texas. I was more than happy to help you sell your truck. I think the new owner will be very happy with it. He definitely had a smile on his face when he left with it. It went to a good home. I hope you'll stick around the forums to keep tabs on the "Mini Truck Movement." :D And as always, you're welcome to come by and check out the latest trucks, take one for a drive and swear at all the powers that be.

Good luck with school, work, etc.

Hate to see ya go, wolfman. I see your point about selling the mini....but it's kinda like selling your daily-driver-go-kart to buy a monster truck so you can jump school buses on the way to work or school.

Sigh.... it must really suck. Dang government!

Thanx guys. I hope that there is still the chance of another mini truck in my future. The big question mark will be what ultimately transpires out of the EPA's blatant disregard of the limits of their authority. I also plan on letting TXDOT know how I really feel about their own behavior as well - after they get my title sent to me for the Nissan of course.
