got 19 mpg on last tank. This is after plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I will change fuel filter and put in some injector cleaner for next tank and see what happens. I've noticed that some days it seams like it has plenty of power, able to drive in fifth no problem without pressing the pedal down too far, but most days it seams powerless. This is starting to make me think I need to check out the carb. I printed out the adjustment instructions that were posted on this site, but I don't think I have the skills or enough info to figure it out. Can anybody out there rebuild these or have experience working on them? Is there anyone I could send it to?
I was just browsing the mitsubishi section and a guy on there was saying that he's had new ngk and other japanese plugs not fire new out of the box on 3 different ocassions. I will check this tommorow. That could cause the intermittent firing and power loss that I am feeling. Anyone else experience that?
say duke, my mechanic sent my carb out for rebuilding....no problem for a specialist..they had some gaskets sent in from japan to finsh the job....it took 2 weeks for parts......I doubt that injector cleaner will help...you might try to find a old timer mechanic that has worked on older cars with no fuel injectors...the type of guy that can adjust it by the feel rather than the manual.....my thought is maybe back pressure from the exaust or cat is rob'n your power...other than that idonno..... note for jakeriver......."down here" we get most of the new slabovians that come to our great country and unfortunatly...they bring with them bad driving habits from their motherland......not everyone is a aggressive pig headed hog(we do call the big smoke "hogtown" for other reasons)...we also have a special set of road etiquette rules here to deal with those that are aggressive and stupid......call "*OPP" and report bad drivers is one thing you can do...I for one was taught that driving is a privilege not a right for people and our mto should remind people of that fact. glenn
I checked my 95 ACTY last tank and got 27. Someone said check the air filter but mine was clean. I drive mostly on woods roads and field roads so alot of 1st and second gear. full time fwd too.
So far I have changed plugs, wires, seafoam in the fuel, air filter, fuel filter, and taken the catylitic converter out, cleaned the distributor cap. I am running out of ideas. The only thing I can think of is to take the atv tires off and put the street tires back on and see what kind of mileage I get. I was wondering how fast a 5 speed mits can go on the level highway. I can only go 90 kmh briefly. It will maintain 85kmh with the pedal to the floor does this sound normal? I posted this in the mits section last week but I haven't gotten any replies. I have read plenty of other makes on here going faster but I'm wanting to hear from someone with a 660 cc mits with 5 speed. anybody?
i don't have a mits, but i have a 660 5 spd daihatsu with no turbo or charger... i still have the stock size tires. have you factored in a tire size difference for the aftermarket tires you have on. 90KMH on the speedo may be actually faster. have you got a friend with a hand held gps? then you could get a real world speed. here's how i get down
Hey, how about this!! There is a pool and spa place in Regina selling minitrucks, claiming they get 60MPG, oops, wait, they got shut down, no dealers license. No, better yet, a dealer in Estevan has minitrucks that get 70 MPG. I gotta find out who is tuning their trucks. I'll hire him in a minute!!
i got my mitsu abut 3 weeks ago from japan and only changed the engine oil, and when i picked it up i (a week off the boat) i had to drive back home to edmonton from just north of calgary, and i was on highway 2 going 105 with my wife behind me for 340 km and used $30.00 in gas (that 40.17mpg at $1.25 per ltr), so i am pretty happy but i am with andy...as long as i can drive highway speeds...gas mileage is not important. wyatt
Remember that these vehicles were never designed to be used on high speed roads like what we have here. The best I ever got out of my Hijet was about 32 mpg, and that was keeping it to 55 mph max. I ran stock street tires on it. Mine was a 5 speed manual, and you could definitely hear that the engine was well wound up by that speed. Mine would do 60 without too much complaint, but quickly got very vocal about doing much more. If you want to see 40mpg plus, keep it to about 45 mph. These vehicles are very much designed for city traffic.
Agreed, I will take backroads keeping it at 45mph and under and I'm sure I'll see closer to 30+mpg then. Holding 55mph against the wind probably wasn't the best for showing top mpg ratings.
standard 12" wheels will bring up your milage, keeping ther rpms low will also help.....one tank will get me 400 kms (25 ltr tank)....a little less when I drive on the hiway....you do the math...lol glenn
Hey Glenn, You're getting 37.6mpg (us gallons) at that rate. So that's really good! I will see how my next tank goes. I may look into smaller wheels/tires. But this next tank may get better. We'll see.
I only get a little under 40 mpg on my 94 Hijet. Using it to check cattle and driving it on dirt roads and highway I probably get 30+ at the best. I used to have a 70 Datsun with a 1200cc motor that got 37mpg so these trucks do not get great milage because the engine is too small. I still will not get rid of my truck because it is just too much fun driving it.Fuel now is about 2.00 a gal so if you get 30 mpg it does not cost much per mile to have fun. ray allen
Hey Ray Allen, Even if you're getting 30-35mpg, that still isn't bad considering these are little 4x4 trucks. And I agree, these trucks are a blast to drive.
As I've said before, my 2005 Minicab van with stock wheels and an auto gets around 38mpg most tanks. But like so many have stated, regardless of it's mileage, it's just a blast to drive, it brings a smile to my face every time I look at it. I am sad when a day rolls around that I can't drive the little bugger! -Andy
Just got my wheels changed out today. And wow, what a difference! I can actually get up to 105+kph! It cruises great at 85-90kph (55+mph) with no problem. And the issues with climbing hills are gone. Now I'm sure I'll start getting better fuel economy. (I recommend keeping with wheels/tires that are close to factory. I learned this by experience)
jtpc....I have kept my original wheels and tire size on my truck. I think mine will run 140km but I dont have the balls to do it. It loves to run 80 to 90 km on the highway.I wish someone had a 94 Dahatsu with a tac so I would know the rpm at 80 km. Drove mine over 50 miles today on the highway, sure runs smooth. ray allen
Thanks Ray. Yeah, I am so much happier with the stock wheels. It does run better on the highway. Very stable. I went about 60 miles today on the highway. Yeah, I floored it and got up to 105 km and it would have kept going, but the speed limit slowed down on me, so I had to back off. I'd be afraid to push 120+ too.
i have put a tach in mine and here are the highway pic's yep that's 6500rpm and it likes it up there and that's when it really comes to life the tach is from canadian tire.
okay guys....I've confirmed it! after always fill'n up with high octane....the other day my employee filled the little guy with regular ......uggghhhh....slumpy ran like s***......sputter'd, cough'd and lost a lot of milage......like I've been say'n...use high octane...it's much better on the little guy.... glenn
Yeah, I use premium now too. Using 87 octane caused it to idle rough/louder. Thanks for confirming. ~Josh
yup.....now that the regular is out and a fresh tank of premium in...slumpy is back to his peppy self glenn
I've been getting 23mpg with a 4speed. My engine is tired though. My top speed is 90k (comfortably) or 110kph if there's a prego lady in the back or I've got internal bleeding or something hehehe. Time for a rebuild. She's puffin'. I bet there's so much carbon buildup it looks like black pringles chips stuck to the top of the pistons.
my van is a 92 Minicab 4x4 with Turbo DOHC automatic I have been averaging 30mpg and higher. So far Changed to Royal purple oil. BUT My air filter is filthy and replacements are on the way. I'm gonna change my plugs n wires too. I think I know where my fuel filter is now so I can replace that soon. hiding close to the gas tank in the back end. Once all this is done.... I hope to see a big boost. I do find that my van likes Shell V power and seems to go further than it does with the high ethanol Premium (from Husky / Mowhawk stations). Then I will test the top end... I've only had it upto 120kph for about 15-20 min prior to now. Next step will be new tires...on my 13" rims.
Snowman you're lucky! Just came from crappy tire in PG and the slouches told me there's no way their tachs work on a 3 cyl. They must beat their employees in Alberta to make them take a minimum effort towards learning about what they sell. I vented at the manager there to get back to selling tires and car parts and lay off coffee pots and bloody garden tools.
