I'm almost ready to give up and just sell my 94! I got the Ohio APV title, thinking it would be easy to get insurance with it! Not so!

I've got my 3rd independant agent working on finding someone who will cover it off premises, for liability.
My homeowner's covers it ON premises ONLY, and will NOT provide any added protection for off-premises. I've been turned down by Progressive, Liberty Mutual, Geico, and others that I fail to remember. It's not a motor vehicle, it's not a motorcycle, it's not an ATV....blah,blah,blah:rolleyes:

This is ridiculous!:frustration: It's like being a lepper...NO ONE wants ANYTHING to do with these vehicles!

I'm so pissed I could strangle every politician, oil man, and bmv worker, one right after another!

i don't understand what the hang-up is. i told my insurance company the make and model and when it didn't come up i told the guy to google it. he said "oh, that pretty cool, not very big, eh?"

then they asked what the price of it when purchased new and wrote the policy from there. i guess i'm one of the lucky ones. like i've said before i have USAA and they are for military and prior military and family of military.. you don't by chance fall into one of those categories do you? they don't insure motorcycles anymore, but had no question about giving me full coverage on my mini truck.

if it's anything like the registration hassles i've been going through, when i'm finally legal, i'm sure the juice will be worth the squeeze...

    good luck.

Farm Bureau will insure them. I used to work for State Farm, we didnt cover them per say.... but I wrote one up on a 96 Suzuki as an atv policy that the underwriters missed and accepted. :D I detest insurance companies....

i used to have a big stepvan (like a UPS truck) that i used for my construction business. i had it insured through USAA for a couple years with a very reasonable rate. when i moved to arizona and was updating my policy they realized it was something they shouldn't be covering, something that the underwriters missed. it was over the GVW or something like that and they dropped me like a hot stone.

I had a 96 Suzuki insured (for 6 months) and just today shifted the policy to a 98 Mitsubishi. The agent called the "OFFICE" and assured me they were able to insure me (that was 6 months ago). So someone there is certainly saying ok to the local agents. I can only say I have insured 2 through State Farm.

Thanks, I'll give State Farm a shot. My ind. agent still hasn't called me back, so must be a no go with his companies. Someone got it with Progressive, but they gave me a BIG DEFINITE NO! Maybe it varies by state??????????

From the abuse I've taken so far, I KNOW the first State Patrolman I see is gonna' throw the book at me anyhow.....but, I told my wife I'm not selling it till I get a ticket/warning! (and, I NEVER get warnings!) I think I'll add Cops to the list of those that I want to strangle!:D

I DEFINITELY don't want to get a policy "snuck" past the underwriters. Then if I DID have an accident, they could just bail on me!! (I'm guessing)

And, as far as moving to Canada, all things considered, that's not a bad idea, except for your cold weather!:D

You being in Antwerp, you are a farmer right;). Well I am sure Paulding county is the same as here in Michigan.

Tractor now can go faster than 25mph, therefore there is a SIS (speed information Sign) that goes along with the SMV indicating the max speed is ("40" in my case). I have been stopped my the State Patrol (Michigan) and after the DL check, all I got was have a nice day.

But as I am just north of Ohio I don't have to deal the"Ohio State Patrol" but certainly I remember them.

Referring to the insurance. I was not aware that an farm equipment was required to carry liability coverage. I carry it because it just because it makes good sense.

Actually, I work at BF Goodrich's Ft.Wayne (Woodburn,In.) plant. But, my brother is a farmer in Van Wert County, and, my Mom still owns the farm that I grew up on. So, I definitely have "ties" to farming in the family. I've actually thought about the spraying rig in the bed idea, if it comes to that, BUT without insurance, I will NOT take it on the road. I'm way too close to early retirement to take a chance on owing a victim a million dollar jury award!!:D

How'd you know I was in Paulding Co.?

Is it street legal? Or, using an SMV sign?

Mine was $75 per year for liability/comp, .......... my homeowners already covers it while it's on my property, so I actually have it insured twice, while at home. Seems like a waste, but I needed the liability ins.

Keep in mind that insurance laws and premiums are different from state to state. I am an agent in Oklahoma and I see some holes in this depending on what state you are in and how you insure your mini. Also keep in mind that sometimes the companies have their own forms that limit their liability and take an attorney to interpret. Right now the State of Oklahoma doesn't recognize the mini's as a public road use vehicle. They will on 11-1-08. Until that time is it an ATV or UTV? It depends on who's definition you are reading. Are you talking about getting a ticket from the law, or getting your insurance company to bail you out of a liability accident? I can almost guarantee you that an insurance company is not going to pay too much of a claim against your homeowners by you causing an auto accident with your mini truck. I don't think it will be a clear issue until each state makes them a vehicle licensed for road use. At that time, tag it, and add it to your auto policy, and make sure it is listed in your declarations as a covered auto. I think regardless of how it is classified, if your auto policy lists your mini and its VIN (or chasis number) as a covered auto on the declarations page, you will have liability coverage for that auto. Don't assume anything when it comes to insuring these little trucks. They are small enough and there is getting to be enough of them on the road that I think we are getting ready to test the insurance companies and the laws governing these trucks.

Also keep in mind that insurance companies do not HAVE to insure anything that is legal to use on public roads. They get to pick and choose and file accordingly with the states that they do business in. I have companies that will not insure Hummers or Lamborginis. I have companies that will not insure mini trucks. I have other agents calling me and telling me that they added a mini truck to someone's policy and their insurance company came back and said it was prohibited and not insured. What if an accident had occurred during that span of time? That is scarry!

    Rick,

that's all fine, but it doesn't have to be recognized as an on road vehicle, as far as I know. The State of Ohio titled mine as an APV, and gave me the off-road sticker that allows use on State property, and parks, just like an ATV. So Ohio obviously feels they are similar to an ATV. And, ATV's are allowed to(at the very LEAST) cross public roads, which would require some type of liability coverage.

As far as homeowner's ins, I have NO liability coverage from them, when/if it's on the road with an SMV. That was the only reason I was searching for SOMEONE who had coverage for this specific type of vehicle. I didn't want to try and "slide it thru'" as an ATV.

I've done everything humanly possible to insure that my a$$ is covered, as well as John Q. Public's!........now, I'm gonna' drive it occasionally unless/untill the State Patrol gives me a ticket......after that, I reckon it'll be for sale!:D

I'm fighting Big Oil the only way I can, riding a motorcycle EVERYWHERE. But, winter is coming, and this Suzuki is gonna' have to save me from the greed.

I can't respect laws made by a Govt. so full of empty headed, greedy, self serving, nitwits! We're on our own, the Govt. can't/won"t even protect us from our own Oil Co.'s, or Financial Institutions.

You're exactly right on Big Oil and I think the auto industry/lobbyists are the main reason we aren't manufacturing something similar to a mini truck here in the good ole USA.

The intent of my post was to make some people think about how they are or are not covered. Ohio is different from Oklahoma and it appears you have checked out all of the requirements of insurance in your state. It's easy for someone in Kansas to read what someone in Oklahoma is doing and think it should work in Kansas. I just wanted people to do what you have done and check it out with their insurance company and/or agent to make sure.

Tried to get insurance for mine through Farm Bureau Insurance in Indiana and they said no way! Never have had a ticket in my life and run a Frie Dept. They have all of my other insurance and we have never filed any type of claim. Any ideas???

I ended up getting it from Foremost Ins, online, for $79 a year, liability and comp only....NO collision. I posted about it, then somebody else got hold of 'em, and they wouldn't cover his. Beats me, I guess it's just "who you talk to"

Mine is insured by my homeowners as long as it's ON my premises. But, I wanted to be able to drive onroad, with a SMV sign, so HAD to find liability for off premises. I got turned down by a LOT of companies!!

With Foremost, it's insured as OFFROAD, with occasional incidental use onroad, which they were okay with! She even checked with the Underwriter to make extra sure!! They also insure golf carts on the road, but many of the ones that turned me down do as well.

BTW, my Carry was from N. Manchester,In. I'm in Ohio

Tried Foremost online and they act like they will insure it, will check with the local agent. I am about 30 miles from N. Manchester my truck came from down by Macey which is south of Rochester. I hate to consider going back to a UTV as this fits just what I am doing and has heat!
