How many bad 4wd shift controllers out there?

    Hi all,

I recently got into the kei truck world when I ran across one on fb marketplace that I just couldn’t pass up. I had been searching for a small 4wd vehicle for close to a year to serve as a flat tow vehicle behind an rv, and a 1994 Mazda/Autozam Scrum dump truck just happened to cross my path. Long story short; I had to have it even if it didn’t work out as a flat tow.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been gathering parts for the towing setup and working on a few misc items that 30 year old vehicles tend to need (vacuum lines, carb adjust, etc). One issue that I noticed was that axle lock, diff lock, and 4wd weren’t working; then they were; then they weren’t; and so on. Troubleshooting and research said it was likely the 4wd shift controller. It was. I removed the controller, took it apart, and found one bad solder joint on a capacitor. Once repaired and reassembled, everything seems to work as it is supposed to.

In my research it seems like the controller is hard to come by. So, how many bad ones are out there right now? I might be interested in buying a few to test and repair.
