Just bought 94 Sambra van naturaly aspirated, drove for 2 days and quit. Found engine fuse #4 blown. Everytime put key in "on" the fuse would blow. Visually inspected looking for faulty wire or something, went through 4 or 5 fuses testing it. Couldn't find anything on first inspection. Just popped another fuse in and now it's not blowing. ( don't know why the change) Engine still not starting. No spark at spark plug, or coming out of ignition coil. The lead going into ignition coil is reading as follows: 0 volts key off 12 volts key Acc 14 volts key On Is the volts jumping to 14 in the on position, where the fuse was formally blowing, indicate anything? Thanks for the insight and support. Great community here.
Hard starts and blowing fuses tends to be the carburetor solenoid failing. The insulation inside breaks down with age and moisture gets in, causing it to short out. The part number is 16196KA140 and can be found from any japanese part sources, but I find that Amayama and/or JapanParts tend to be the cheapest.
Thanks! I just ordered that, I will replace it as it seems to be a common culprit. That said, if I am getting voltage to the coil but no spark out of the coil, lends me to think that component may be bad. Thanks for any other wisdom or guidance.
Also remove and clean any and all ground cables. Nice and clean. Once together coat with 'Super Lube' grease.
Ignition coil arrived first. Just replaced that, still no spark out of the coil. Waiting on the carb solenoid to arrive will swap that next.
I haven't opened up distributor yet. I'm still troubleshooting why no spark, which appears to be happening before the distributor.
Update: replaced the carburetor solenoid mentioned above. Still no spark, still no start. Thanks for any direction or other ideas.
Testing voltage with meter and noticed this, not sure if significant: Voltage going into ignition coil with engine key in on position is 12 to 14 volts. Voltage going into ignition coil while cranking drops down to -60. That might be causing no spark? Any ideas what would cause voltage to drop while cranking like that?
I'd start at the battery and while following the wiring towards starter - ignition coil...test at each connection/junction for power. Seems you have a wire/ing issue in the path somewhere.
