    Hi All,

I figured it would be good to have 1 source of info . I recently bought S83P , rode 5 hours on my motorcycle, loaded it on the back and drive it back for 5 hours. No issues except for the radiator fan coming on almost the entire way. (expected for carrying 220kg bike)

I have started repairing the terrible wiring left by the previous owner however, I do have big plans.

    Replaced battery with : MF40B20L a 390 CCA and 40 AH

    Replaced all lights with LEDs:

    Headlight: 5x7 LED

    License Plate Light: BA9s

    Indicators: BA15S or P21W

    Parker Lights: T10 or W5W

    Top Indicators: T10 or W5W

    Cluster Lights: T10 or W5W

    Brake lights: BAY15D

I have a few questions which I hope people have the answer:
    • Engine oil and capacity?
    • Transmission oil and capacity?
    • Diff oil and capacity?
    • Oil filter?
    • Engine gasket kits / numbers?

I have R12 wheels, what tyres can I go without rubbing? A/T or M/T

Oil 10W-30 SE, 3.1-liter, Filter FRAM PH4967, NAPA Gold 1394, NAPA 41394, or Wix 51394. Any parts house should be able to cross reference from those to whatever brands they have in stock.

Fan belt, on mine with the A/C Compressor, is 10X777mm Standard “A” pattern.

Plugs Stock are NGK-BCPR5EKD, not available in North America, and expensive to get from Japan. That Work: NGK-BPR5E-11, gapped at 0.9 to 1.0-mm. Cross To Toyota 90048-51134, Denso QL20TRS, Champion RC12YC, could use RC9YC if need to change heat.

Battery: I fitted a 35/75-2. It is the largest which will set on the stock battery tray. You will need longer ‘J”-bolts to mount it securely. Stock battery cover needs to move out about an inch. Put 6-mm, NutSerts in for the lower attachment points and NutSerts in some 1/8X3/4 strap for the top two.

    Thermostat: 44-mm Flange, 82-C, (1.73-in, 180F). Tama W44DE-82, or Gates 34065

Timing belt: Gates T930. Best to buy a kit with tensioner, and water pump and do those when you are in there. Saves going back in to replace them later. These are interference engines, (valves will hit the pistons, if hte timing belt breaks with the engine running. There are timing marks cast into the engine.. Better to run a straight edge center to center, and mark the dampener and the cam gear before you take the old one off. Saves the time to find the stock marks which can be confusing.

Timing marks are on the flywheel, accessed through the hatch in the bed, and remove the rubber plug in the housing. Can be hard to see and differentiate. When I have to do the clutch, I will pull the flywheel, and put some better marks on it, or install a degree tape if ai can find one that will work. Most likely going to be more and better marks, and paint the rim and marks in contrast colors, and add an adjustable pointer.

Pertronix makes a kit to convert the distributor to pointless. Sealed hall Effect, with everything potted in epoxy. All fits in the distributor cap. They don’t list it on their tech page or catalog. But one of the guys successfully installed one on his 81LP. Check and make sure you don’t have a factory pointless ignition before you order one. Pertronix 1631, Denso 3-Cylinder. They make another for Denso 3-cylinder distributors, with the other rotation. Coil recommended is the Pertronix, 40611, 40-kV Flame thrower.

Transmission, (Transfer case is integrated), 3.1-liters of Gear Lube, not sure what weight. I used a synthetic 50w-90. The spec is for GL3, which is very hard to get. Can use GL4 or GL5, if they say they are safe for yellow metal. The synchronizers are bronze, and some gear lubes will leach out the copper, causing them to fail. Probably unobtainable, or very spendy if you can source them. Best just to not damage them.

Differentials take the same Gear lube as the transmission, again make sure it is safe for yellow metals, the locker mechanisms have bronze sleeves. Front 0.61-liter, Rear with the locker 1.3-liter.

Wheels and tires, I have a two inch lift, to get more clearance. 14X6 ATV Wheels, with 165/75R14s. The tires a Nokia winter with open lugs but not muddies or off-road treads. Two pairs one studded for winter.

The hard part is finding the 4X110-mm bolt pattern wheels, in suitable sizes.
