DD51T - Anyone get this (Amazon) style carb working?

    Hey all,

First post. I'm super stoked on my purchase of a LHD 1993 Suzuki Carry (DD51T). I live in Canada and these are rare; most are RHD from Japan - this one is from the Philippines.

It's somewhat of a basket case; the interior was in pieces and it barely ran to get it on the trailer. The guy said it had a new carb and it was likely a vacuum leak. I have a fair bit of experience with carbs so it didn't really scare me. Little did I know carbs from the 90's have quite a bit more going on haha.

I dug into it and discovered that the EGR system seems to have been deleted (we don't have e-tests here). The carb is a 3+1 - looks to be from Amazon (link below). After playing with it I realize the automatic choke doesn't seem to work. When I pull on it by hand it runs pretty well.

    So two questions:

    - Has anyone successfully used this type of carb on an early 90's Carry?
    or
    - Anyone have a link to a carb which will work well with this vehicle?

Some pics of how she looks & the carb. Any advice helps - thanks!

Thanks so much I'll take a look. Did you use all vacuum ports on this unit? Your auto-choke works fine?

    (edit - I bought it!)

Well, I can't answer the first question. All I can tell you is that I brought my truck and that carb to my mechanic, and he installed it. :)

It seems to operate just like before, only better. Good luck!

Just put one on 1996 Suzuki DD51T. Runs real good.

I had the same problem as you, even with a new carb (same one Kauai Kei referenced). After much diagnosing and my clothes smelling like really rich running exhaust, I figured out the issue was my water lines that feed the auto choke. Mine were super clogged with junk / rust inside the cooling passages. I flushed the cooling system at least 4 times, using air in the lines to assist blowing them out. Once water would stay clear after a couple of heat cycles, it works perfectly. The choke begins opening up about 45 seconds after starting and it's fully open in a few minutes.

An easy way to diagnose is pull the cooling lines off after you start it (when cold). Water should flow through (doesn't matter the direction through the carb) freely. If it does not, you have a plugged cooling system. Be careful when flushing. I drained, flushed and refilled with antifreeze and it didn't do any good. I drained again to do a more aggressive flush. I drained and filled 3 more times, blew low pressure air into the lines, back and forth, etc. It was a chore, but it works perfectly now.

There is good information in this forum for making adjustments after you get the choke issue ironed out. It does no good at all to make adjustments if the choke is stuck on.

    Sincerely,
    Robert
