Acty Van Exhaust options

Hi all,

First time posting. Got my 1993 van a few weeks ago and have ran into problems sourcing an aftermarket exhaust. The original is completely rusted out. I have seen on a few websites and ebay that the HA3/4 has an aftermarket exhaust for fairly cheap. Not much for HH3/4.

Best to go with a custom job? Croooober? I searched on this forum and didn't find too much from the last few months.

I went with a wiruswin exhaust that I got from an importer. Good quality, nice finish, fit really well. It was pretty expensive to ship to Canada but probably no more than trying to get a custom pipe made.

Should I block off my carb hoses that used to feed in warm air? or add some sort of aftermarket filter?

 

I went with a nearly straight Wirrus Win stainless exhaust that I bought off ebay. I'm pleased with it. Not too loud with the baffle, but a nice sound.

Assuming the van is similar to the truck underneath, I connected the 2 hoses together with a 2.5" length of 1" I.d. hard copper. You may find you need to clamp a section of copper to the exhaust tubing to get some heat. One man postulated the heat is to stop carb icing (!!?!!).

 

Thanks! I don't think i'll be using it too much in cold weather so I will attach the 2 together.

 

Yeah, that'll keep the airbox from sucking in water/dust when it thinks it needs heat.

 

I wish someone would just bite the bullet and get a pallet full of oem style aftermarket exhausts shipped to the USA and sell them slightly marked up so we can run somewhat oem exhausts.

 

LOL! I'll do that, if you supply the $20,000 capital and allow me to pay it back as each muffler sells!

I understand your frustration. I'm ill over the cost of brakes. A front disc costs $125, but a similar, but unuseable Civic disc costs $20.

Actually, that just illustrates the problem. How many Actys are in this country? 10,000? 5,000? How many need a muffler? Mazda sells twice that many MX-5s each year and the muffler that came on a 2014 will fit a 2006 (my '06 wears a '12 muffler).

I disagree drop weight and straight pipe. It will sound better and there are cheaper options with more corrosion resistance for cheaper than a muffler shop can do.

 

the issues with going to a muffler shop or going aftermarket is you lose the OEMs exhaust ability to warm/deice the carb on cold mornings.
