Having some troubles with a current mechanic working on my 1993 Daihatsu Hijet (s83P) with some carb issues. It's been in his shop for 6 months and I need to find someone who knows how to get my truck running. Any leads I can follow up on of mini truck mechanics in Utah?
Initially the truck stalled out when I would come to a stop. Started right up but again anytime I would slow down to stop it stalled out. I took it to a mechanic to help figure out what was going on. He thought it was a carb issue. He messed with the carburetor but then the truck wouldn’t start at all just kept sounding like it wanted to turn over but wouldn’t. I bought a new carb from Todd (who has been mentioned on other forums) and the mechanic created a manual choke but he still can’t get it started. Not sure what the exact issue is but I love my truck and just want to get it going again. Any thoughts?
Also check your vaccum advance line coming off of your distributor to your vacuum manifold tree! Your vacuum manifold tree might be broke or leaking a little bit and need to be replaced. He’s a picture of my old broke one and a picture of what my new one looks like!
When I order my parts I always by 3 at a time, a little expensive but this way I lays have 2 as back ups and parts are getting harder to find & get. Let me know what you find. With the truck running spray some carb and choke cleaner on the vacuum lines and if the engine goes to high idle you have a leak or use a vacuum gauge.
All the local parts store sell vacuum hose, but you want 2mm vacuum line! I ordered high temp silicone vacuum line. Remember these trucks are over 20 plus years old and needs to be replaced.
I ordered my vacuum lines from https://hpsperformanceproducts.com/ & here’s what I ordered HPS 5/64" (2mm) ID Red High Temp Silicone Vacuum Hose Tubing and HPS 3.5mm Blue High Temperature Silicone Vacuum Hose Tubing, I preferred the different colors to dress the engine up, but you can get them all in black and I replaced all the plastic barb fittings with brass, but you can go to a local automotive store a get a vacuum fitting kit or order one from summit racing.
@Nautydog1, it's been a while. My mechanic was severely injured in a car accident a few months back and was sidelined until just now. I asked him if he could prioritize my mini truck to finally get it fixed. I showed him your messages above (thanks for sending those) and he told me that we put in a manual choke line so there are no vacuum lines. I wish I were a mechanic so I could just go fix the thing myself but I have no clue if what he is telling me is reality. Any thoughts here? Thanks again for all your help!
I personally would stick with the oem carb! You have other things that run off the vacuum, I talked to Amanda at G&R imports about a month ago and they just hired a person to just rebuild carbs. Your distributor is ran off the vacuum advance and so are other things. I thought about going manual choke many times. It’s your call.
