Had a hiccup, CLAUSS saved the day!!!.

    (original posts -----------------------)
I read through everything I could find and some old links and I'm posting this because some of the detail was either missing because it was so old or it doesn't appear accurate for my 1995 S100P (2WD model).

Rather than messing with the door panels for now what I decided to do is take off the ashtray and build a small box to mount a speaker under there so I can use that and the existing one, we'll see how that goes. So I bought these components:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CG8N0H8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (single DIN radio)

    https://www.amazon.com/BOSS-Audio-B...01RNNX8U/ref=psdc_10980771_t1_B00K2ESJZ2?th=1 (3.5" speaker)

(I'll update this as I go and try to update w/pics)

First off, as far as I can tell everything on my truck is stock and no frills. It has an original Daihatsu radio.

First issue was how to get the radio out. I ended up taking off the whole dash because of the old threads, one saying there was like one screw holding in a the radio mount, maybe 2 underneath (me not being able to find any of this) and the other saying they took off the whole dash. What I learned after taking off the dash is I'm pretty sure you could remove a piece of trim that went around the radio, vents, and up around the speedometer, etc., and that hid 4 screws that screwed a mount in for the radio and the square small box compartment under it. For mine, this mount was two metal pieces screwed onto the sides of the radio and this plastic box. Here is the whole dash from behind (upside down)

The radio fits pretty well, it was a bit wider than the original and the plastic box but loosening the screws enough on the box to provide some play made the new radio fit pretty well. So next issue is the wiring.

Old threads said there were no always-on "power B" and one guy said he ran a wire to the battery. This seemed weird to me because my original radio had a digital clock. I never set it but I couldn't imagine it was designed to always reset. In any case, the harness to the original radio had 6 wires, red, red/white, blue on one side. White/black in the middle, then green/black, green/yellow. [THIS WAS EDITED AFTER TROUBLESHOOTING]. (edit to add image of the wire harness), Greens are speakers, Red is Power B+ always on, Blue ACC+ power when key is on and the White/Black one is the negative. The Red/White had no connection in my original radio (Thank you CLAUSS).

I ran out of time and needed to order a few things so that's where I'm at. Next step is to wire up the new connector for the radio and test the power, wire the second speaker and then probably not until next weekend put the dash back on. Dash was so-so to get off, some connectors were a bit stubborn and there are one wire bundle was zip tied to the frame and that had to be removed to get it off entirely.

Here is the finished product, I built a quick and dirty speaker mount that slides into bracket for the ashtray. I also re-wired the old speaker so both work.

On my S110, I found that the radio adapter for a Toyota to universal, worked fine to convert the stock harness to the new radio I put in.

Did you take out the entire dash, and not just the surround for the instrument cluster and radio? If so, some guidance on doing that would be appreciated. To me it looked like there are two connectors up by the windshield which would be difficult to take out with the windshield in place.

Yes, I (unfortunately) took out the entire dash. Mine had three screws in the top of the dash under some small covers you could just pop off. I don't recall any other issues with the top other than it was a tight fit until I got everything disconnected. I took it out laterally, out the passenger door, I couldn't pull it up and over or rotate it over so it seemed to be the only way but once everything was disconnected that was pretty easy. Only other thing of note was there is a metal tube support under the radio area that doesn't really look like it is part of the dash but needed to unscrew two screws at the bottom of that to get it out.

Added pics about, I had this leftover connector, everything seems to be working and couldn't find any place to connect it. Anyone recognize it? There are a couple unused plugs presumably for 4WD, maybe AC, etc., mine is completely base model. Please let me know if you have any idea:

Ed teh same wiring harness for multiple vehicles and option levels. It might be part of the 4wd stuff on an S110, or something installed just in the passenger van, like the variable wipers.

I have 4wd in my 1995 s110p and I also have an unused connector very similar to the one in the photo. I thought it was either for AC or perhaps a cigarette lighter, which oddly my truck doesn't have. I looked for other unused connectors on mine and found several. Has any one made use of the existing unused wiring on their vehicle for other purposes like installing a lighter or lights or anything else?

I know it has power because inadvisably just stuck some speaker wires in it to "confirm" it was the stock speaker connector (it's not that far off and part of it fit on there). Anyway, lighter makes sense. The connectors seem to just be a red and black flat piece, but this random image from a golf car site - https://www.golfcartreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lightersocket-768x512.jpg

Seems to show the same type of perpendicular connection. So probably just 12v power in that.

Hello my friend, I'm in the process of getting a new radio also. How do people hear you on the phone calls? Clear or far? Thanks

I don't have a need to talk on the phone in my Hijet so I'm not planning to hookup a microphone. I swapped a radio in another car, though and just ran a small clip on microphone out from under the dash. Rather than mount it, I would just pull it out and clip it when I was talking.

Hi again. I recently replaced my stock am radio and just wanted to clarify the wiring you describe/show on the stock harness because I think you may have accidentally swapped two of the wires in your description. The solid red is the battery+ always on, blue is the ignition on, the white w/black is the battery negative. The green are speakers. The red with the white stripe is the "mystery wire". It did not have a connector to it in the original am radio. I replaced the stock radio in my 1995 s110p hijet with a polarlander that several other people on here have used. It has two tiny built-in speakers that are pretty sad (but I guess I can't complain for the price). Also has Bluetooth, a USB port, and micro SD card slot. Fits snug in the bay, pressure fit, with no screws needed. I'm happy with it so far. And I have not had any problems with the clock staying set or fuses blowing. It is annoying to use the FM radio though because the tuning buttons are terrible. Other than that it's great.

Thanks Clauss, I'm traveling now but seems like I may have swapped the negative and the mystery wire. Not sure if that could be causing my short but definitely worth a shot!

I just installed this voltage reader/double USB port/12volt cigarette lighter port below my center console where the ashtray used to be. My truck did not come with a 12v lighter port and I wanted one to plug in 12v devices or to plug in an inverter. I am powering it through the connector you showed in your photo. So far it is working well. I wired in two quick disconnects on the positive and negative wires. The negative fit into the plug no problem, but I had to use tin snips to trim down the positive disconnect to fit in the plug connector. IMG_20211128_123926475~2.jpg

Clauss you're a SAVIOR!! This was the problem, I went back and looked at my original AM radio and sure enough, the red/white that I wired to negative in the new radio had no connection and it was the black/white one that did. I connected black/white to black of the new radio and disconnected the red/white and all my problems were solved!! Thank you so much you saved me an incredible amount of stress and wasteful troubleshooting and can't even imagine how long it would have taken me to figure that out. THANKS AGAIN!

For those of you that like plug position references, here are my notes from my radio install (looking at the vehicle OEM harness, plug side, not wire side). I don't recall colors, but the positions seem consistent with the colors/pics in the above posts.

I included some other observations in my post linked below:

This made me cry for you. Yes, as you later said, reiterating for the benefit of others, remove 2 phillips screws above the speedometer, and then the entire dash trim cover can be popped off. You have to unplug your 4WD switch if you have one. After the dash trim cover is removed, there are 4 phillips screws that hold two brackets in to which the cubby slot and OEM radio are screwed to.

Thanks to everyone in this thread that did the heavy lifting and make this so easy for me.
I used some m3 screws and nuts as a lip catch mount off the back of the trim. Curious as to how yall mounted yours.

Does anyone know how or why the clock resets with key off?

My mount was pretty quick and dirty, it's mostly in by friction. It was just slightly narrower than the space so I just used some electrical tape to wedge it in the mount the old radio used. For the clock it means you haven't wired it to the always on power. In my post the one I call power B+ is always as it connects to the batter, ACC+ is power only when the key starts. In the hand drawn figure above the batt is always on ACC is key turn. The radio will have both.

Mine is just a pressure fit with no screws. It is tight enough to keep it in place, yet I can pull it out easily if I need to access wiring or remove the dash panel. The clock sounds like you have might have your wires swapped. Check for the always on with a voltmeter and no key in the ignition.
