Cant find insurance in Ontario

Well it looks like I might have to park my van for a while. I can't find anyone who wants to insure my van. My current insurer (Intact) is dropping because they will no longer carry RHD, not even existing policies. I did get a quote from Facility but i can't consider $8000 a year.

So far my rejections are from Lant/silverwheels, Intact, MyCollectorCar, Belair Direct, CAA, Desjardins, StateFarm (they said they would if I had another car), All State, Specialty Insurance Services, RBC, Reliance, Monnex TD, Isure, insuremetoo, echelon, and easy way insurance broker.
I will try Unica and Chubb. I talked somebody at IBMG they didn't reject me but I haven't back from them yet either.

I will admit to having an accident about a year and a half ago (not in my van) that i made a claim for - but does one accident in 25 years and RHD mean no more insurance for me?

So if anybody knows of a insurer of broker that can help I would love to hear from you. And if you have insurance in Ontario don't give them any reason to take it away because getting insurance is getting harder.

hey, I feel for you. I went through the same hassle a couple years ago, and only got it from Desjardin because I had started their application process before they changed their policy (others have had less luck). I have heard that if you can set it up in a commercial account, you may have better luck. I also had Gore Insurance drop me prior to that after they stopped covering RHD. I'm just waiting for the bomb to drop, and have to retire my trucks. I hope you find coverage.

Unfortunately, commercial will be your only option... and being a Van, it might be harder to get it insured.

You could try digging into provincial vehicle laws. I want to say I read somewhere that you couldn't be denied insurance on a vehicle that was registered by the province (if the reason is "we don't want to"). That wouldn't prevent them from offering you terrible rates though.

Did any of them give you a good reason why? Ask them what the difference is between LHD and RHD. Also, don't mention it's RHD when applying unless they ask.

You can get insurance though FA - Facility Association (to the earlier point of not being able to refuse you insurance).
FA is all insurers combined who underwite people such as impaired drivers. it's $6,000 / year
I got a 3 month policy last year to take me until i parked the vehicle for winter, they pro-rated and charged an extra month as penalty.

Sorry to hear that Desjardins stopped covering RHD. I've been paying them $175/mo since 2010 and no claims yet...

Thanks for the input. So far my van remains parked. I have started considering an umbrella policy.

The idea is that it would cover any liability should I get in an accident and have to pay for somebodies damages and what not. I would still be driving with out insurance which is not good. I don't really like this idea.

Basically I am putting this on simmer for a while.

Has anyone had any luck with insurance in Ontario since these last posts? I have been looking and calling like crazy. Only company I found is Facility for significantly more money than insuring my brand new F150.

Mine is insured with State Farm. They explained that it wasn't a problem since I was an existing customer.

I know this is an old thread but anyone have any recent luck with this? Ive been trying and I got quoted 3100/yr from facility with no tickets and only one not at fault collision. Are facility the only ones that offer rhd insurance in ontario?

I recently got a quote from Mitchell & Whales. Mine isn't cheap either for a recreational toy, but due to my postal code, I was quoted $1995/ year.
