89 HA2. Drove all day no issues until power loss on my street getting home - felt like it was almost surging. Parked on street and turned off to diagnose - Starts perfect, idles perfect, and revs happily in neutral or with clutch engaged. Once I try to go into gear and release the clutch, even giving her more throttle than she should need, truck sputters out and dies.

    Town,
I'm assuming no Cat, verter, on it, but it sounds like possibly restricted exhaust!
If it was sitting a while, did something make a nest in the exhaust system!
    Remember, air in, air out!!!
    Good Luck,

I think you’re onto something...took the hose off the carb that runs to the air filter, and the problem immediately and completely went away so we’re getting closer...

    Yeah, as you know.
It needs clean air at the intake!

Would it likely just be a vacuum issue? Anything else I should look for? I believe there’s a butterfly valve directly behind the air filter, correct? Just trying to determine all culprits but as I said we’re at least getting closer

butterfly valve behind air cleaner on carb should be the choke. It's spring loaded and should be closed when truck is cold. You can manually operate it to make sure the spring works. The choke works off of coolant temperature, and opens up as the engine warms.

I'm assuming that if you disconnected the air cleaner and everything runs normal now that you either have a really dirty air filter, or something clogging the intake tube somewhere.

Okay understood - I really appreciate the thorough response. Air filter was just replaced and symptoms occurred even without one in place, so it must be the intake tube.

We went and looked at a Hijet a few weeks ago and whenever he would rev it up, the suction of the engine would actually collapse the intake tube, choking it off and making it run very poorly. I don't know if it was a stock part or not as he had put a snorkel on it, but definitely something to check. You wouldn't know it unless someone was watching it while you revved it up.

That’s wild - just out of curiosity I searched for a replacement intake hose and don’t see anything...uh oh

Just tested the solenoid on the carb (only one on the e05a carb), which I believe is the air vent solenoid. It’s shot - nothing even when 12v applied. Trying to confirm it’s the same solenoid as the one on the e07a before ordering but looks like that’s my culprit. Can anyone confirm it’s the same?
