Hi all, I recently saw a few different kei van based campers like this one https://bringatrailer.com/2018/11/28/factory-camper-for-four-1992-mitsubishi-delica-vantech-4x4/ and I just gotta have one! I've thought about buying/building a conversion van/camper/RV type of thing for a few years now and these are just too perfect for a couple reasons: They seem like they'd still get reasonable gas mileage (at least better than the 15mpg an econoline gets) They still look pretty fun to drive (manual trans, not too big) They don't look like they'd get stuck at campgrounds (4x4 campers can be hard to find) They're cool and weird (just can't beat that) So my question for all you guys is, can I get one cheap? I have a lot of resources available to me money just isn't one of them. I'd consider myself a pretty skilled mechanic and I currently work at a machine shop so I have the ability to fabricate a lot of stuff, and I have almost unlimited patience and determination. I can spend *maybe* 5 or 6 thousand on the base vehicle, which probably rules out a camper, but maybe I can get a van at least and build a camper body onto it (is that frowned upon here?). I can give more details about project goals if you guys think it's a reasonable idea. I'd welcome any thoughts (I'm getting tired of pitching a tent in the back of my ford ranger).
el, I don't see where it would be frowned upon here! Your looking at a Mini Van, and I think a lot of people would enjoy your project! As far as picking one up cheap, I'll let the other members chime in and give you some advice as far as where to look and what to look for, and what not. Good Luck, and keep us posted, with Pics!
