    Hello All,
While driving my 92 Honda Acty Street G Van (odometer: 88,000 km) around 30 mph, I heard a pop and coasted to a stop, having lost power.
When I try to crank the engine, I can hear the starter going (I think) but won't turn over.
I need to replace the valve gasket anyway, so I'm up for a project.
    What's the problem?
Thanks and let me know if you need additional information,
    John

Not sure. I’d start with checking to see if your getting spark at the plugs.

Has the timing belt been replaced? Hopefully it has, a couple of times... If never, 88K and and 28 years old, it may have failed (sorry!). It's an "interference engine" so the valves hit the pistons when it fails.

Or, it could be like Jigs says and is something simple...

I took it apart. The timing belt was broken into 4 pieces!!!

What is the damage when it fails? I ordered a new timing belt and valve cover gasket.

The engine is what is referred to as in interference engine. When the cam belt breaks, the cam quits turning, and the pistons can, and usually do hit the valves. If you were lucky you have bent valve stems, and need to replace the valves. If unlucky, you will have damage to the head itself, and possibly the pistons and block.

The course forward is probably to pull out the engine, and get it on a stand so you can check things, and see what if anything is broken.

Replaced the timing belt. Not starting up. I don't have the time to fool around with this any longer, so selling...unfortunately.

Before you sell, do a cylinder leakage test. That way you know for sure what's going on, like bent valves or another mechanical condition.

  8. I broke my timing belt on '93 HA4 and managed to get the head off and fixed without removing the engine. I ended up replacing valves, valve seals, gaskets, water pump, etc, etc. Truck runs like a champ now.
