About a year ago, my exhaust (muffler) rusted out on my 1992 Acty. I phoned up the place that sold me my truck. He informed me that it would cost around $400.00 for a new one, and his quotes are usually on the low side of what he ends up charging me. Then he called back and said he could get me a really good used one for $250.00. I ended up buying the used one from him because I was a sucker. It didn't look too terribly bad when I got it, but it is now completely rusted out and all the baffles are loose. I will not bother to mention the seller's name, but he is not one of this sites sponsors. I decided there's no way I'm going to cough up big bucks for another Honda muffler so I went down to our local muffler & tire shop and explained my situation to the shop owner. He showed me a bunch of dead stock NOS mufflers he had kicking around and I selected a fairly compact one which he sold me for $40.00. He was not certain what it was supposed to fit, but said he thought it was a Walker brand and it had a sticker on it with the a number 27000 and also a number 17000. On the muffler itself, the number 518708 is stamped into the metal. I should have taken a pic of the muffler before I began adapting it, but I forgot to. It took me the better part of a day to fit it up and weld a U-pipe to connect it to the original upper part of the exhaust. I was able to weld support rods to the muffler in such a manner that I could still mount it to the original hangers on the truck chassis. After I was done modifying and fitting it, I went down to the local hardware store for some black muffler paint and I was surprised to see they now have Hi Heat Gloss white. So I decided to paint it white. I'll attach a few pics to show what the end result looks like. So far, I've only briefly run the truck inside my shop and have not had it out on the road yet. I'd say it sounds a tad louder than the original stock exhaust (when it was still in good shape), but certainly way quieter than my rusted out exhaust. By the way, you might notice in the first pic, the receiver hitch I just finished installing on the Acty. I'll try to submit a seperate post about how I built that within the next few days.
That does look nice. Last weekend I had mine up on a rack, and we replaced a section of the exhaust between the catalytic converter and the muffler. We use some 1 1/2" flex pipe, but it was too big, and when we clamped it down, there is a small leak. We will try to find some smaller flex pipe to replace the 1 1/2" that we used. We also found an exhaust leak on top of the cat. converter. We were able to braze it from the top with the engine cover removed. Now, I need to work on my cv joints....
I now have my Acty roadworthy again......and I absolutely love the exhaust note from this muffler. It's not at all loud, but it makes a bit lower pitched sound than the stock muffler and just seems to make the engine sound healthier.
