Hello have a new to me Cushman White flat bed truck with 4 cylinder.
    Its 2wd 5 speed 4G82 motor.
Does anyone know or could snap a photo of the starter make and part# for me? Id really appreciate it.
I'm also interested in buying used:
    Starter
    bed latches
    Carburetor (its currently propane)

    Sticker designation G 898611 898613 (W/AC)
    Chassis stamp 60 1906
    Wheel year 96
I'm not sure what all that means but there is no sign it ever had air conditioning if that's what w/AC means
Any information or decipher of the sticker numbers would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Fritz

if you physically have the starter it will probably be cheaper to get it rebuilt locally, and it should include a warranty.
I think some toro mowers shared the same engine.

Thats the problem I dont physically have one or Id rebuild it and be done. I think the Toro cross reference is for the 3G stuff and the starter must be different or vendors couldn't get $350 for a 4G fitment.
I have a new starter that came with the truck that looks like the right one but its just a bit smaller everywhere and the snout is too short to get the pinnion into the ring. So I'm guessing the 4G starter is in fact an upscaled fitment.
The minicab references u14T etc you gave me do seem to have a longer snout than the "too small" starter I have here so maybe all minicabs did use the 4G type trans/bellhousing and those will work fine.
But the number you gave me off your 4G starter is a definite fit and may be a game changer in asking the ebay vendors for a cross reference. As well there's got to be somebody in the country with used parts Ive contacted all I found on this site.

    Fritz,
If nobody has used bed latches, there are new ones on ebay for about 20-35 bucks, plus shipping! I know not a great deal, but I got lucky last year and found two, for mine @ 15 bucks each, plus shipping! It wasn't worth making my own!

All the Denso starters appear pretty much identical from the motor back. Just the front housing that bolts to the engine is different. I just got a new in box Subaru Denso starter for 30 bucks. I couldn't get a solenoid that cheap. I plan swapping my front housing to see if it fits. Not sure if the Bendix drive has same tooth count yet or if they will swap between Subaru starter and my hijets starter.

Interesting that could be helpful. In my case I have no core but I think I have located one in Japan.

Thanks Limestone, latches on ebay will help. As soon as I remove the ratty looking lumber rack it came with the sides will fall down.

I was able to bump start the truck yesterday and it ran well for 30 seconds with no bad noises, so I'm ordering a starter. It seemed to fuel starve and I dont yet understand the propane system so Ill either learn or fit a carburetor.

    Fritz,
I find it interesting, that your unit is PROPANE! Did it come that way originally? I think that's one of the things your trying to figure out! With all the carburetor problems these things seem to develop, I think that I would, do my research, like your doing and possibly try to stay with the propane, if it fit my needs, for a mini truck! Some where on the forum recently, some one posted a list of all the manufacturers designations! I'm having a hard time remembering where, and when! Sorry, your gonna have to search!

    Thanks for the feedback Limestone,
Yes its propane and at least one Impco regulator disc shaped thing which looks newer, so it had some service. but cant be certain it was born this way. System looks well done and once I get under it Ill see if there was a previous gas tank mount, marks etc. The system looks like one Champion sells as a Toyota fork system but at least one Impco regulator pot. Its a kludge currently with a barbeque bottle in bed connecting to the tank under bed and nothing but a hissing sound to judge pressure. Ill get a gauge on and see if low pressure may be the issue (I hear that shuts the regulator diaphram) and then test power and function of the fuel cut solenoid. Maybe it ran cause enough seeped by the cut solenoid while sitting. Could be a simple low fuel or fuse deal. If I could fill from our house tank Id call it a keeper but getting propane refills is a pain.
I didn't realize they have a history of carb problems although looks to have a remote accel enrich diaphragm and many hoses so I can see it. That is good to know as carbs and kits look totally unreasonable and that Harley clone with some jets and my wide band could be worth the effort.
If I "get into propane" I could convert all my power tools that need the gas drained almost every use and have one bottle as a swappable tank. Generators and fire pumps (CA) that always have fresh fuel would be a plus!
Ill need to find out if the Cushman tank would need re-cert and what that costs.
Also Id swear when I turned on the barbecue tank I saw pressure indicated on the main tank, then later it read nothing. It could be there's a check valve that's not letting it feed through to the main tank?
Now that it has run and I have a starter sourced ill do some organized trouble shooting and throw the ugly lumber rack over board!
The engine sure was smooth like a well balanced sewing machine.

I got a starter quickly from BeForward about $110 and it came from japan through Alaska to CA in about 20 hrs! It was a model similar to Werase643's suggestion of U14T specifically Mitsu Minicab 1987 MU15V.
Then hooked my barbecue tank to the existing tank and it fired right up, so it was simply out of propane then somebody borrowed the starter. The tank was original from 96 so I replaced that off amazon for under $150 in steel.
The propane system seems very good and starts easily warm or cold. I have no point of reference regarding performance and the speed governors are still in place but its smooth and pulls well on a moderate grade, seems to have very tall gearing. It has under 20Kmiles and looks like its never been tuned.
Found a timing belt for $6 on amazon that may fit. Bando TB113 which showed up as made in Germany and looks like the high quality Continental belts used in the german 3. If it fits it is the same as 84 Mazda 626 19mm by 1038.2 mm 109 teeth. Ill confirm it if/when I replace it and also try to identify the idler although mine should still be fine.
The coolant was a mess maybe soluble oil or stop leak but after flushing a bunch it doesnt seem to be a head gasket failure so It is so far a keeper.

I found a battery small enough to fit the stock cage with some padding for $130 20 amp hr lithium iron 600 CCA battery at amazon and decided it had the reserve to run the light bars Id like to add. These starters are around 1o00 watts so even 150 cranking amps is enough to melt the starter but the reserve capacity may be helpful if the lights draw exceeds the alternator output when idling- Id like to be able to use it as a mobile lighting cart. With a quick plug I can swap this battery between the truck and my generators with out the shelf life concerns of lead acid. I actually ran a 2 pound lithium iron battery in my track miata for a bit and it started fine including the day I left the ignition on through lunch. Besides the weight the best part is they arent dead after sitting for a yr or two and have about 10x the cycle life.
Overall drives much nicer than my Truckster and has front brakes but at 6-2 I barely fit and have to watch my foot doesnt get caught on the steering shaft when I need brakes. Its actually much tighter than the truckster.

Limestone good advice on the propane it works well, wont go bad sitting and apparently some places you can get a tap on your home tank to fill from (Maybe not CA). For now I will unclamp the tank and lower it when I run low maybe buy another tank so I can swap them. Now Im wondering if I should convert my generators and tools that sit most of the time.

Thanks all for the help on locating a starter etc.
