First, I am brand new to these mini trucks, so please bear with me
I purchased this little rig from a guy that bought it from a guy etc...
Supposedly it has sat for at least 2 years, No one could get it running, one of the previous owners was told the head gasket was blown.

I changed the plugs and wires on it, drained the tank, put in fresh fuel and it did start, and idle.
Didn't act like a blown head gasket to me, but seriously down on power, so maybe.

The first thing is , the plugs seem to foul when it sits overnight, cleaning them will allow it to start again the next day. Am thinking maybe the injectors are leaking down, Any thoughts?

Second thing is, it will move on its own in reverse and low but will not pull in Drive or 2,
I was going to start by changing the strainer and trans fluid, (it does look kinda dirty) But all the Diahatsu strainer kits I can find show a gasket for a different shaped pan. The one on this truck is a straight rectangle, with 15 bolts and a drain plug in one corner. An anyone tell me the transmission type?

One of the PO ' s did some "custom" wiring Spliced in from the harness to the coil, There are 2 wires, one feeds the coil directly and one goes back to a black wire in the harness, but had something in it that was either melted or just degraded beyond recognition, I cut it open and it looked like it might have been either a fusible link, or some sort of ballast. Any idea what that is?

I do notice that when the truck turns over but doesnt start, there is a waste spark that escapes the main coil lead and arcs to the metal framework around the coil, so i am thinking this "thing" may have been a ballast of some sort to bleed off the high voltage

Any help would be appreciated. Wife has fallen in love with the Twin Cosmic Roof, so I gotta fix it LOL

And yea, I know those wheels and tires gotta go!!

    Thanks

Hey welcome to the forum. I literally started a thread asking for info on a turbo auto Daihatsu Hijet so I am very interested to see your awesome looking van and the progress you make!

If he has D-2-1, it would imply distinct gears. And, not a constantly variable transmission.

I don’t know a lot about automatics, beyond basics. I’ve always liked manual transmissions better, and the only car I ever had with an automatic I went to the wrecking yard, bought the parts, and switched over.

That said: The majority problems can be traced to fluid control in the transmission. They have planetary gets sets inside, and move by locking the outside of the gear ring for the gear you want to use. This is done hydraulically. Even the electricity shifted ones use hydraulics, they just control the valves by electric valves instead of a hydraulic pressure valve system.

First thing is to check the ATF level, and see it is where it should be. Low fluid levels will cause your symptoms. Broken down fluid will cause the symptoms, As will a bad or clogged filter.

So check the fluid level, color and smell. When you check the level use a white paper towel to wipe the dipstick. It should be a pretty bright red. If it is some other color, or turning black, drain and replace it. Fold the towel over so you don’t get fluid on your nose, and smell it. If it has a burned smell, the bands and clutches inside may be burned and need replaced. If the fluid is bright red and looking new. Somebody else has tried draining and changing the fluid.

Look for cables and hoses that are disconnected or broken. The automatics have vacuum modulators which tell them when to shift. And/or rods/cables to tell them throttle position. If those are loose or missing it won’t shift right.

If you’ve done all you can externally, drain it, pull the pan to get at the filter and replace the filter, and look for things that can be adjusted, or are broken.

I only quickly tried your chassis number but it didn't work, I always forget what combination of the letters and numbers works. Maybe tonight I try again to see if we can get a chassis specific parts fiche for your vehicle.

TTC- I couldn't get anything to work on the numbers either. I did contact a supplier of parts and he said he would contact Japan and see if he could get any info

My intention is to change the fluid, filter etc... as it looks pretty tired, But I cant identify the actual transmission yet and I am hesitant to drop the pan until I can be sure I can at least get a gasket for it.
The transmission is definitely not a CVT, it is a 3 speed, As Jigs-n-fixtures said. It does pull fine in 1dt and reverse, so, I figure the low/reverse band or servo is working,

in 2 or D it does try to pull, but seems to slip so I am thinking it is either the servo or the band for second is shot

From my limited experience in Automatics, I know that some will only use 1st when you select it and then in D will start off in 2nd, At least the Ranger ones do that. But , this is a whole different animal so I dont want to make any assumptions,

I guess the best thing for me would be to go ahead and drop the pan, see if there is any "junk" in there and maybe try to find an actual part number on the filter itself.

    Thanks
