Have this S83P that is blowing a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust. Thinking that is has head/gasket issues- any other possibilities other than this? If we tear into it, are there any tips on doing this job? I see where this is an overhead cam engine and has a timing belt. Would removing the engine/drivetrain make this job easier? Any tips or suggestions on this situation Thanks!

Get a leak down tester and be sure that is your issue.

If your actually going to get in that far, it will probably be easiest to drop the engine and get it up onto a stand. Unless money is a big issue, I’d try to do a full rebuild.

Yep. Do a compression check, look for oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. Are you having to add coolant or anything?

Lots of smoke out the exhaust and coolant on #2 spark plug causing it to miss out. Would appreciate any experiences on removing the cylinder head and setting up the timing belt.

Haven’t had to get into the engine on mine yet. so, I’m just going on what I saw working on my S110P, with the scissors dump. With the dump, and scissor/dump units, you can get at the engine by lifting the bed, and removing the engine shield plate. Which gives you unfettered access to the top of things.

If you do it in the truck, you will play hell trying to do it through the access plate in the bed. So, you should pull the bed if you are even going to attempt it in the truck, just so you can see things, and have clearance for wrenches.

And, it would be easiest to pull the engine and transmission as a unit. You only have three points and the hoses/cables keeping it in. But your still going to need to access the top of the bell housing to sepearate the engine and transmission. And even if I were pulling the engine and transmission, I still might pull the bed off, just to get better clearance, and visibility. Remember anything you break is hard to get and expensive.

Removing the bed is pretty straight forward, with a helper, it is really simple.

Yep, sounds like a cracked head, or hopefully a head gasket.
