My son in law has a 2018 Nissan Clipper (believe that is correct). Any way he was driving it and said it was hard to shift between gears and then it quit moving. I had him sit in the cab and shift between all the gears and it appears that it is shifting correctly at the linkage at the transmission. I had him move the transfer case lever back and forth and it also appears to be moving correctly at the transfer case. I took the plastic cover off at the side of the clutch housing and I can see the fingers on the clutch go back and forth when he pushes on the clutch. With the motor off you cannot move the truck if it is in gear and as soon as you put it in neutral you can move it. With the motor running it will not move in any gear and does not change rpms when letting the clutch out in gear. I tried 4 high, 4 low, and 2 high on transfer case and still does not move. drive shafts do not spin with it in gear and running. I search all over this site and could not find a similar situation. Does anyone have any clue what could cause this? I drove the truck recently and the clutch and gears seemed fine. I believe the truck has less than 200 miles on it.
whether or not the clutch makes a difference in putting it into or getting it out of gear when running might be useful, but I think in any case you're looking at a transmission (likely input shaft) issue or clutch issue given those symptoms. I'm surprised it doesn't roll when in gear since it seems the engine and trans are essentially not connected.
I’m stumped. I’d probably start at the transfer case. It could be vacuum actuator related, and some how locking things up. Not sure on any of that, but the only difference that would effect things, between running and not, would be the engine vacuum pulling something half way into position on the transfer case. I’d try disconnecting the vacuum lines and see what happens.
Sounds crazy, I know, but I've seen trany's do a lot of crazy things when the fluid's not right. Weather it's low, hi, or just plain, wrong fluid/ old fluid! Just saying
I'm stumped also. Being that it is a manual transmission do not think it is the fluid. What I find really puzzling is the fact that with the motor off and it in gear you cannot push it. Take it out of gear and you can. I have worked on cars all my life and having a hard time putting my head around this one. The truck was driven into a ditch about a year ago and hit a concrete culvert. But we have been driving it after the wreck and everything worked fine. I wonder if somehow the screws on the pressure plate sheared and it is spinning when the motor is running and the clutch has enough pressure on it that when it is off and in gear you cannot move it. Really hate to split it in half to find out I was wrong. Again I do not think it has 200 miles on it and clutch seemed normal last time I drove it. I think the transfer case is cable actuated if I remember correctly. Thanks for all the replies.
Any smell of clutch burning? maybe strong enough to keep you from pushing it, but not enough to grab at idle? Maybe see if you can let the cable out a little and see if you get it to grab?
Gonna have to explore the lockup. It free wheels in neutral, but locks up in gear! Naturally something's not right, and until you get into it, your not going to know. If at first it was getting hard to shift, and then it quit working. Something is out of align, or bent, or loose, come undone, or not moving as it should. Doesn't really sound like something broke off or is jamming things up. No clung, grind, or loud bang, like you will get sometimes. Hmmmm. Good Luck! Limestone
