So my truck was running fine on sunday, but monday it woulen't start. I've had a bit of an issue in the cold lately, but mondag was warm enough for me to not even need a jacket. Brand new battery, engine will whirl forever and sounds normal while i'm turning the key. No funny noises sunday when driving either. It has gas and it's getting fuel because I can smell it if I pump the gas.

What could it be? My dad(red seal mechanic) is away for a few days and doesn't know what it could be without looking. Could it just not be getting a spark?

If it has fuel, the only other option is spark.

Okay, good to know that it's most likely not something big then? Like, it should be easy to get going again?

So would that be the plugs or the distributor cap? I don't know whether I should open everything up or leave it for saturday when dad comes back. I love driving this truck(it's my daily) but i'm mechanically disinclined. I only really know how to do the oil and put in fluids/do tires. I wouldn't even know what spark plugs to get if that's the problem.

I guess i'll just have to ride the 3wheeler the 4km to work the next two nights since there's no other vehicle here.

Clean the cap and rotor. Then adjust the point gap.

    Get it back running ?
I’ve seen these flood out sometimes causing a no start . Seen it when started and stopped a bunch of times and not run but for a minute or so .
You can check the spark by taking off the engine cover , pulling the coil wire off the disturber cap and stuffing a screw driver or any spark plug in it . You can crank it and see if you have spark from standing outside the drivers door while cranking if you don’t have a helper ( me 99% of the time ) if you have spark off the coil then put it back on and try it with a single plug wire that way you’ll see if the cap and rotor is doing it’s job
If you got spark and your pretty sure your getting fuel, pull the plugs , if they look soaked then clean them up and dry them off . Reinstall and try starting again . If it starts to cough hold the to the gas pedal to the floor if it doesn’t just start .

Haven't done anything to it yet, dad os supposed to come home today now. I don't like doing anything I haven't seem him do before as i'm not a fan of making more work for him. Now that you mention it, it was kind of coughing before when it did start regularly but I figured that was the cold?

I hope it's as simple as the spark ir the distributor cap, I love this truck and it's about the only thing I enjoy right now.

Started right back up this morning and runs fine, weird as hell. As far as we can tell water got where it shouldn't have been and then froze and now it's a bit warmer so it unfroze. Gonna be installing an oil pan heater anyway(though that doesn't seem to be what froze and made it not start) and parking it in the garage out of the wind/rain.

mine will sometimes take a long time to start. It's like the carb bowl is empty and has to fill up. It will crank eventually as long as I don't pump the pedal and flood it. Still a mystery and very intermittent.

So i'm having trouble again. It has been fine the past week until yesturday morning. Wouldn't start, so I took the three wheeler off the back and rode that home, went to sleep. Got up and dad drove me back over to work at 3pm, started right up.

Wasn't cold at all when I left work, no frost outside and probably about plus 2. Then again at 11pm when I left for work, truck wouldn't start so I had to take dads truck.

We put coil wires and spark wires from a tracker on since my wires were bad, and it has been solid all week until yesturday. Any ideas? They were a little loose I guess, could it be that moisture got in?

Planning on grabbing a distributor/rotor and new wires in a few days on payday, but wondering if there are any other ideas to throw at us. We're convinced it's the spark, since the engine whirls(brand nee battery, engine whirls so starter must be fine) and it's getting fuel. Once it's running it's perfectly fine and runs better than any car i've driven before. I'm stumped, hoping the problem is just the wires or something.

Edit: I work overnight, 11pm-7am. It wouldn't start in the morning, I went home to sleep and then came back later in the day and it started fine. Drove it home, then it wouldn't start again when it was time for work. Very confused why it would work fine and then not.

I wonder if you could have gotten a tank of borderline bad gas? The next time it happens try squirting a little ether in the carb and see if it will help it fire up.

Hmmmm.... possible. Haven't had much of an issue since even in the cold. Hoping it's an isolated incident.

    Late to the party,
Since it’s so intermittent and you say it’s cranking but no start , you let it sit and check it out later and it fires right up . I’d look at possibly it’s a spark issue . Only thing is you need 2 people to check it while cranking for ease . You can always do at least part of it by yourself by getting a cheap spark tester and pulling the motor cover and pulling the coil wire and putting it into the coil and to the coil wire to distributor.
That way to can reach thru the window and crank it while looking at the spark tester . If you got spark then move onto one of the plug wires and see if you have spark off one lead , this is where it helps to have2 people
    Then on from there
Sorry , not a crappy typist and even worse speller so sorry if not a good explanation
Good luck with tracking it down
