I am selling my 1998 Daihatsu Hijet with 4 High/Low to purchase a newer fuel injected truck. I am currently looking at a 2005 Daihatsu with 4 High/Diff Lock but no 4 Low and a 2003 Suzuki with 4 High/Low but no diff lock. Both newer models have power steering and AC. I turkey and deer hunt Eastern Kentucky and Southern Ohio, both of which have some steep grassy hills and rocky terrain. Which truck would serve my needs better as far as climbing and traversing the difficult areas I hunt? Also, is it more difficult to find wheel and tire combos for one or the other? I hope to run an all terrain radial type tire for pavement, hard pack, and logging roads. Thanks in advance for any assistance you all can provide.

On my Scrum, which is a Suzuki with Mazda badging, it was 4h&4low no dif. lock, the Carry I got and built for my son had 4 wd only on transfer case but it had what they called a 5 speed tranny which was actually a 6 spd. when in 4wd because it had what they call extra low gear.
My truck did fine around my steep property but I had to be careful or I would get light on one corner and loose traction. My son's truck, with dif. lock had no problems . The 2 speed transfer case is a little faster in 4wd but slower on the road because the 5/6 speed tranny had both a higher and lower gear.
These were the older DD51T trucks, mid '90's, but I expect the new ones are similar. If you are in pretty rough country I would think you'd definitely want dif lock.

If you're not planning on hauling heavy loads, I'd pick diff lock over low range. Particularly if it has a granny first gear like Jim's.

diff lock is more useful than 4l0 imo, dont think ive used 4lo in my life on any 4x4s

Like Ohkei Dohkei said. I have both on my Suzuki Carry and I only use low gear when I carry dirt in the back. Even with my 25 inch tires first gear is low enough for me to climb the hills around my property when empty. Articulation is poor on these trucks so diff lock is very useful.

same only use low in the transfer case of my hijet when hauling rock and dirt. i load it till the dump can barely tip it. more then 350kgs lol. diff lock is a must i think for anyone wanting to do alot of off road, these trucks are light and can have issues getting power down. i have had mine bouncing trying to get grip or just spin 2 wheels untill i use diff lock
