    Hi Folks,

Just had my 94 Carry 4x4 with dif delivered today. First thing I noticed after inspecting was the hoses coming off the converter were rusted threw. I’ve been told these are for keeping the carbs warm in cold weather and will not cause any harm? If that’s the case, I’ll need a new converter as the truck gets used in very cold temps. Correct me if I’m wrong here.

Is there a simpler, less expensive fix. I could care less about having that converter as long as it’s not going to rob me of any performance.

    Thank you

Are you sure it is a converter? Sounds more like a heat shield. Please post pictures.

Telling me the photo from my file / iPhone is to large to extract. Have to find another route. One hose goes into a channel in the bed and the other connects to another hose that runs to the filter air box.

I use the “Image Size” app on my iPhone, and iPad.

From what I’ve researched. One tube ties into the air box line to help heat the carburetors faster. The other is simply a vent going into the frame.

I’ve been told I don’t “need” either and by eliminating the cat I could just run a straight pipe with no performance loss.

Here are my options is the above is correct.

    1. Completely eliminate and run a straight pipe.

    2. Block off the frame hole completely because the hose stub is completely rusted off and continue to run the hose the air box as it’s not completely rusted off YET! Haha

Biggest concern is it not effecting the performance.

Depending on your climate, and whether you will run the truck in the winter, you can get rid of the preheat system. But if you are somewhere cold, you may need to keep it. It preheats the air to the carburetor so the cold air moisture mix doesn't get cold enough passing though the Venturi to freeze in the throat of the carburetor.

I’ve had that happen on old sports car, trying to get across the US in winter. That truly sucked, and I ended up fabricating my own preheat system in the middle of Nebraska.

The vent to the frame is actually the air intake. The minis pull air from the inside of the frame, and then runs through the filter. The air enters the front of the frame in front of any dirt and dust kicked up by the wheels, and then gets pulled through frame to the engine. Other wise ou pick up road dirt and rapidly clog the air filter.

My Hijet has an air port in both frame rails. The one from the left is ducted through the preheater, to a thermal/vacuum controlled diverter which controls how much air comes from the left or right side. If things are cold, it pulls it through the preheater, when it is warm, it comes from the right side.

see a lot of these truck with the air intake re routed in a snorkel set up..

is there anything gained by this & rodding out the converter like on an old car?

Not all have catalytic converters. But since they are smog exempt for the most part, you can just put in a straight pipe where the converter is, should there be one.

The snorkel gets the air intake up above the cab, and looks cool. I thought about doing one on my Hijet, before I figured out how the inlet is set up. I guess if I drove on dirt road with a group, I might try doing one. But mine is a scissors dump, and it would be a bit hard to get it plumbed so it didn’t interfere with the bed movement.

    good info.

i dont have to deal with dust here at my place either... was just wondering if it was the old more air in = more air out = more power thing.

still havent figured out why this motor has so much smoke out the puke tube though.
