does anyone have any tips for getting the front axle out of the diff? my front left axle is clicking bad on turns in 4WD, i have a full front subframe w/axles i can take a axle from and eventually rebuild this one but the roll pin doesnt seem to want to come out of my spare subframe. worst case i was thinking about drilling out the pin and putting a small screw/nut to replace it but thats last resort material. thanks
ive thought about that but im worried of the pin getting soft and when smacking it with a punch it will just fold on itself, ive read with Subaru axle pins you only get a couple good shots with a hammer/punch before the pin gets damaged. i tried once with a punch and it wouldnt move. might try soaking some lubricant in it
if it is the same as in FA model there is no pins like in KJ so removal requires strong pull/tug to remove it. It sometimes go smooth sometimes is pain in the ass...
it for sure has the pin, same as Forester etc have however now the axle is the least of my worries, its suddenly stuck in 4WD. last night i switched from 4WD to 2WD for a bit then had to go back to 4WD to get through some deep snow, today after a ways in 4WD i cant get back into RWD. the green light stays lit, the shifter switch does nothing, and you cant feel the thump of it going back to RWD
4wd components requires cleaning, also check the electric switch under the dashboard. if you push the button of 4wd you shuold hear a 'tic/tac' sound. if you don't check it first then go to vaccum lines near engine. Please note tht i have experience with KJ and FA Domingos so in KV it may be a bit of differences. I am surprised you have pins in axles this is typical for KJ....
i didnt believe they had the pin at first either but they for sure do, its just half the diameter of a Forester and other Subaru lol. i bought another punch i'll give a try for the axle but the 4WD is still acting up the 4WD switch on the shifter still makes the clicky noise, i played around with the 4WD switch and its not the issue i think. when it warms up im thinking its a vacuum line or the 4WD valve. has anyone had these go bad or is it usually just a vac line? http://store.jpnoid.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1141
I use this punch to remove all of my Sambar roll pins. I have never had any issues with damaging the pins using this tool, just make sure you are driving them out in the proper direction as they are tapered a bit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QV2J2HS
Use of that type punch is the only way to properly drive roll pins. The way the tip is ground helps to break its grip in the bore. Fred
i got the pin issue resolved but its still stuck in 4x4. out of curiosity, whats the clicking noise thats behind the dash everyone says to look for? ive read some Subaru Justy sites with them being stuck in 4x4 and it seems like its usually the solenoid, everyone says to bypass the solenoid and direct hook up the vacuum lines to engage/disengage 4x4 and then you'll know if the solenoid is bad or not or if its in the trans/a bad vac line. my Subaru FSM shows the solenoid as being on the transfercase area which likely means ripping off the box, but if its behind the dash that would be less of a headache. i can see 1 vac line going into the dash, does that supply the 4x4 solenoid vacuum from the brake booster possibly?
