If there is already a thread on this topic, I was not able to locate it. I have an 89 hijet, 550 with 4 speed, high range/low range 4x4 with rear diff lock, and a pto driven dump with rock tailgate, and a warn 2k winch mounted forward in the bed for loading bear, etc. This truck is amazing! It's my daily driver. Running synthetics all the way around, with a lower radiator hose circulating block heater to assist during the coldest times. Where I live in Alaska, it's a small town with speed limits of 25/35mph, and my commute is only 5 miles for work. I have a few modifications in mind, including stiffer coil springs in the front and/or 1-1 1/2" strut spacer with camber adjustment slots, and a slight shackle drop in the rear to allow for 23" atv tires on a spare set of rims for weekend hunting/play. I have 48k Km's on the engine, and she's running strong, but inevitably, one day that will fail, and when it does, I'm hoping to replace the 550 with the next generation's 660 motor. Does anyone here know if they have the same fit and bolt pattern? The 550 is great for what it is, but 110cc more would be welcomed. Sorry it took so long to get to the point, just wanted to share my excitement for these trucks. It's getting a lot of attention up here and I suspect more people in my community will be jumping on the mini truck wagon soon!

I too am interested in a 550 to 660 swap. I just acquired a 1990 hijet with the supercharged 550 and as there is very limited information/parts availability for the EB-80 engine. Id rather use the 660 which seem to be much more available in the USA.

My google-fu has failed me and I cant find any information about other engines that can be adapted to the 4 speed trans.

I did a Daihatsu. GR Imports had the info and how to do it. A few electrical changes but they had the stuff to do it.

so aside from electrical, it was a direct bolt, exact fit?
