Hey all. I might be picking up my first mini truck, a 1991 Acty in a couple weeks. I was hoping to buy a tiny camper trailer but I'm not finding any with towing packages. Should I look for a Carry if I want to tow? Bigger question, anyone know of a compatible cabover camper? I saw very little information on the Romahome and absolutely zero available for sale in the US. The company I'm working with to get a truck (Moshi Moshi Motors in Vegas) said they can also import a camper for me if I can find one but I am just not finding any at all in Japan or the US. Looks on the exterior are not important at all but I'd prefer something that only needs interior cosmetic help or less and has a bathroom and air conditioning. Thanks so much!!
good luck with your new ride. You are going to love it. As for your camper. think custom build. You could use some 10 gauge sheet metal and some 2x2 to make frame. some 1/4 " plywood for inside. . very simple. but think about coils and shackles before adding weight.. would love to be a part of your project Tony
Thanks man! I love it so much. I don't really want to do the custom camper thing cause I can't do the work myself and it sounds super pricey to have the things I'd want inside. I don't care if the camper looks cool or not if it fits and is light!
Remember you are going to have to go with heavier coils. Also shackles to even out truck once coils have been installed. after that you can start thinking about adding a camper. as for cost. camper shell and inside shell about $200. Bunk, coleman stove. and sink another $200. Never say you can not do it. I am sure you can find some one close to you. Here on the forum that would be willing to give you a hand Tony 1996 DD51T
My Acty van came with a tow package already installed. Well, it was about 97% installed because I found wires leading from the fuse box that went to a drain plug area near the right foot of the driver's footwell and just disappeared under the van somewhere then I found a bunch of wires all bunched up under the rear bumper with a tow hitch that had been welded in and then subsequently cut off of the frame and a plug for the lights attached to the tail lights. All the wires in the rear had been cut off, so I don't know how they ran from the front to the rear. I also have no idea how big of a trailer the van was towing back when everything was still installed. I ended up removing all unnecessary towing-related parts when I installed my third brake light.
Yesterday I noticed a Daihatsu Kei Truck on a parking lot of a shopping center, had a camper container made by Mystic Camper People and an additional tag called MiniPOPBee , checked on the net and found the website of that company in Japan, here you can see what they offer for all key trucks, also some Honda Acty trucks with MiniPOPBee are shown, exterior and interior http://www.mystic.ne.jp/camper/mini_pop_and_bee/mini_pop_bee not that cheap, prices are +/- $30.000, the Daihatsu even had a tow hitch. and a parking system with camera, here the DIY for that wireless parking system-diy https://660camper.com/wirelessparkingsystem-diy/ more pics here on https://660camper.com/category/minipopbee/ https://660camper.com/doushinomori-campsite/ mobile toilet https://660camper.com/about-poilet/ mobile pizza shop https://660camper.com/aozora-pizza/ camper. registro https://660camper.com/registro/ http://orm-web.net/wheels/post-78.php The cabin unloaded J-cabin Mini W (Factory custom) https://jrva-event.com/car/car_detail.php?vehicle_cd=92 J-cabin prices start from abt. $20k https://www.pinterest.com/pin/720998221572466548/ Hijet version registro http://www.mystic.ne.jp/camper/registro
There is a guy on YouTube, who has built a couple of trailers out of XPS foam. Looks interesting. I may try building one this summer. The links above got me thinking, and gave me some good ideas. Was thinking of building a unit that would slide in with the bed sides removed, and attach to the hinge points. Now I think I’ll figure out another way to secure it to the bed, and leave the bedsides on to use as fold down tables.
The MiniPobBee version on the Daihatsu I have seen had the entrance at the rear and the rear bedside had a cut-out for that door. Looks like the unit was only secured by the original bedsides. I made a pic of that section and you can also see the tow hitch
I bought a tiny tractor, and futzing with it consumed most of my time this summer. Still thinking about building a camper for the Hijet. Saw one made out of plywood, and it looks like it would be a fun build.
This rear bumper/hitch has a 200 lb off-road rating. https://www.goldstarparts.com/product-p/actybumper.htm That implies a max trailer weight of 2000 lbs. That's a lot for 38 HP to pull, so I'd look for a tear drop or pop-up camper in the 1200 lb range, or less. https://www.rvtrader.com/Travel-Tra...8073&grossVehicleWeight=*:2000&sort=price:asc https://camperguide.org/teardrop-trailers/
