What would we do without our Shops?

Guy's, and I guess Gal's! Think about it, what would we do with out our shops, Garages, barns, etc...? I truly enjoy being able to go out, and work, on and improve things, weather it's a fix, a repair or just making it better! Projects, and plans, It sure makes it easier to cope with such things as Covid, and the likes! Look how many people are re discovering, them selves and are trying new things, where we've been doing things all along! It's always been a mainstay in my family, if you will. It's just what we do. Fix, repair, build, especially today with the Internet, and the information at hand. I understand some people are not handy, or don't have the confidence to try things. Well, that's a shame, because they are truly missing out on, some very beneficial rewards! When I was young, instead of buying something small and limited, to live in. I had a much greater vision, and Built a place that I could work on projects, and always had room to expand, if needed! I understand that's not possible for everyone, and I truly do feel blessed in that re guard, and other ways also! It's nice to be able to leave a project apart, and tools strewn everywhere, turn out the light, and come back tomorrow, and pick up where I left off! That is a very use full benefit! Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have helped my grandfather, who did everything, in a 2 1/2 car garage, that we expanded, into an additional, 5 car garage by adding onto the front of it, doubling, the work/storage area! I was inspired at a young age, to fix, repair and do what ever was needed! When people say their bored, I just never could understand that. In my mind, I'm always, fixing, and improving something! What's your set up like?

I've been limited to a standard 2 car garage, but it's done some pretty miraculous things over the years. My next home will have a shop or room for one.

I need to get out and clean mine. Need to hunt down some firewood first, so I can heat it up, and not have to wear my Carhartt insulated bibbbies.

    Jigs,
Too bad we don't live closer. I could keep you stocked in firewood, for darn near forever! I'm sure your well aware, old pallets make great firewood, when you don't have tree wood available!

    Ohkei,
That 2 car garage, can save your but, plenty of times, I know you agree! I remember, back in the Day, growing up, mom and Dad, had a single car garage, that Dad and I added a car port overhang, with no door on it, and it worked at the time. I would go out in the garage, and re finish furniture, as a side gig, when I was in high school, using a Kerosene Torpedo heater. The old days, help us to appreciate things, a little more!

Limestone, the Salmon-Challis NF boundary is a mile away. There are lots of beetle killed trees, that need thinned. So I can get a permit for 6 cords of wood for personal use for $20.

This year they have been letting folks cut without permits. They need to thin the standing dead to reduce the risk and severity of wild fires, and they can either give wood away for personal use. or put out contracts to pay folks to cut the hazard tress, and pay Davis-Bacon wages to accomplish what the fire wood cutters will do for free.

Limestone is right. Without my workshop I'd be lost. It took me quite a number of years to be in a position to have my shop built, but it gave me time to think about exactly what I wanted given the space limitations of a city lot. It's around 1000 sq. ft., and is filled to the brim. - As anyone who has a workshop knows, you always expand to fill up any available space, no matter how big the area is. The place is a mess right now - largely due to the fact that I've got too many things lined up at once, but I swear that will change.
Every once in a while, you see pictures of other people's "man caves", or "workshops", and they are pristine - checkerboard floors, colour co-ordinated tool boxes and cabinets etc. etc., and for a few minutes I'm jealous, but guess what. - -try firing up a MIG, or a TIG, or a Stick, then cut a bunch of steel, and do a bit of grinding and painting, and see how nice your checkerboard floor, and fancy cabinetry looks now. - - - Just saying.
But someday - I will get my place straightened up - I promise!

    Arty,
Your right! I was gonna put up an Additional, 50 ft. x 100 ft. Garage years ago, with an additional storage area, 20 ft. x 50, on the back end just for Yard stuff, so I could back up the carry all in inclement weather, day or night with automatic doors, lights, and everything else in between! My wife was smart enough to talk me out of it, as she knew that I would fill that thing up in a heart beat! LOL!!! Over the years, like many of us I turned down more stuff than most can Imagine! How much is enough? Right?
