Now that I have my transmission out for a broken clutch, it makes sense to replace the rear main seal. Can this be replaced by prying out and tapping a new one in or do you need to remove the pan? I have not removed the flywheel yet but will soon.

Yes, the rear main seal is replaced by pulling the seal and driving in a new one. The pan does not need to come off. Once the flywheel is off, there is another metal plate that comes off too, and you will have all of the access you need.

That is good news, that type of rear seal set up is easy. Will likely do tonight.

Well there is no plate that holds the rear seal like I thought it might be. Once you remove the spacer plate behind the flywheel you have to pry the seal out. Thought I had a new seal from the parts the previous owner left but I don't.

What you are calling a "spacer plate" is what I was referring to. It does not hold the seal in, it is just in the way and needs to be removed for access. Luckily, the rear main seal is the same as the Subaru Justy. It is part number 806768060 and you can order it from any Subaru dealer.

I just ordered one, from my local dealer. Crazy to not replace it at this point. Thanks for the part number.
