Some of them make pretty good paper weights. I hate this thing on this Sambar, what a piece of crap. Main thing is the choke, takes forever to warm up. If I adjust it to come off sooner it's hard to start in cold weather. Works fine in 15 or 20 minutes (yes the thermostat is good) so I just leave it running while I'm loading or unloading firewood or tree trimmings or even cutting trees or whatever I'm doing with it. I only use it around the farm and hardly ever get past 2nd gear so I get about 2 gallons per mile. Has anyone came up with an alternative carb, electric choke heater or any other ideas?
oh we gots a zillion carb threads.... options are getting better as guys are getting more clever with what they are using.. ive got a thread with a couple of the guys here about a rhino 660carb on one of my older trucks. but honestly? NOTHING is as good as the changeover to an EFI model.
I looked at putting a fuel injection system off a Honda car on it, which I have all of, but the distributor won't fit and it's needed to run the system.
Raven is working a set up off of his honda 4 wheeler... he just doesnt have it done yet. he has a thread on it here. couple of other guys are also working on set ups. im just not very patient, so traded to an EFI model.
If there was a way to make the choke automatic I would go the ATV carb route. I doubt a choke cable long enough for the Sambar exists.
I found 8' cables on ebay for a decent price (I'm cheap), might be able to make that work by putting it by the drivers seat.
I think as mini truck owners, were frugal! I like that better than, cheap! LOL! Mine being a left hand driver, and a standard shift, I massaged, and indented, out a small area, with a ball peen hammer, just below my left knee, and with a couple washers, I was able to place the choke knob, where I thought it was convenient for me while starting, with my right hand on the key! If you go EFI no reason to keep the distributor. You just go with like a ford EDIS system or even a coil on plug set up.
That would be great if the FI set up I have supported that and didn't need the 3 inputs from the distributor to work.
Retro fitting existing EFI from another vehicle is very difficult. The honda system isn't programmable unless you pony up for hondata which is around $500 your stuck with what ever tuning is in there for a much larger honda engine. You can do something like speeduino for $200 or so if you are crafty. You can get into a megasquirt/microsquirt system for just under $400. I don't know what your skill level is.
