Where is the turn signal flasher unit? Usually they are on or right by the fuse box but I can't seem to locate one. Thanks!
Generally the flasher would handle both. I would check your connections to the blinkers or the switch in the stalk. Could be dirty or not grounded.
The relay is the same for both, but the turns and the hazards are powered from different fuses. Turn signals are on fuse #3, and the hazards are on fuse #13. Both of these are on the fusebox under the dashboard.
If there is still a problem it could be the signal switch itself. Mine was acting up and it was the contacts internally that were dirty. It is a bit tricky but you can disassemble, clean and reassemble.
I think that's my next step. I checked the fuses and all is good. Power is definitely getting to the flasher. Going to have to disassemble the switch and clean it out and hope that does it.
The thing to remember with old cars like this, is it's usually something simple caused by corrosion or dirt. Simply cleaning some things like connections and switches can do wonders with just some elbow grease. Much cheaper than throwing parts at it.
Often true, but you can't discount 25 year old original parts failing as well. What I really need is a workshop manual as I'm kind of shooting in the dark with this truck. Most of my experience is with older American and European cars.
There is a "workshop manual" of sorts, but it does have a number of errors and omissions. For what it is worth, it is available here: http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/--Old Models--/Subaru Sambar KS-KV English Service Manual/
Nice! I'll check that out. Hopefully I'll have time to pull the combo switch this weekend and give it a clean.
Well I'm happy to announce that you guys were right! It was the switch and a good cleaning made the blinkers work again. When I took it apart it wasn't that bad, at least compared to some of my older British cars, and I thought there was no way that it would work but sure enough, it did. Thanks for all the advice!
Since I switched to all LED bulbs my blinkers have been a little too fast for my taste. I just got a new Novita EP34 electronic relay at O'Reilly for $16. The relay doesn't have the fancy molding around the connector but the terminals of the plug fit right in.
