Hi Joe, Thanks for posting this. Although a valid statement the author failed to include a very important piece of information. Using this method requires a tachometer that has a 1 (one) cylinder setting. Also, it relies on a common +12v with a switched negative from the ECU. It does not guarantee that all systems operate in this manner. In addition, the pulse width of the signal to the injector varies according to atmospheric conditions (as controlled by the ECU). It is unknown if there would be any ill effect on the tachometer operation due to the variance in pulse width.

    Rpm gauge

Checkout tinytach.com. It looks simple and cost $47

This wont work on a daihatsu EFI engine. It doens't have any spark plug wires to attach the pickup to.

I think it is probabily right the tach if you read 1100-1200rpm at idle, if your truck comes directly from Japan and anyone tuned it on US gasoline.
The three cyl. engine seems to rev slower than it do...
I feel the difference, and I'm italian, and here we have about only 4 cyl. cars, in US I know that cars has more displacement and cylinders...
You can adjust the idle (and then, after, the CO emissions).

You can find the workshop manual @ http://www.daihatsuhijet.co.uk/manuals-downloads/

    I hope this helps.

I bought a tachometer for mine.
On its instructions, manufacturer says to connect it at the negative wire of the coil.

I can't try to connect it at now, but this week I do the work (I'm waiting for the tacho support that I bought on e-bay), then I say what to do.

Mine is a Piaggio Porter, but it is the same thing of the Hijet.

Mounted and connected, it works perfectly.
I bought a "pilot" brand tachometer for about 50€ on e-bay.
Simply I set it to 3cyl and connect it to the negative of the coil.

Seriously I can't understand where it is the problem...
Thinking on what i read on this forum, I imagine I was in trouble and I figure to have huge problems to make it work...

I think, or the problem is in the type of tacho you bought, or about no one knows how and what to do to connect it... :p

Mine was a fuel injected engine with coil on plug, distributor-less ignition. that's probably why yours was easier.

In yours you need a tacho for a single cylinder engine, than you connect the negative of the coil to the tacho...I think it is easier than mine...

I could use the info on removing the cluster. From the picture of your tach install it looks like we have the same trucks

I responded to your PM. Apparently I'm not getting notified of messages/responses anymore. I don't make it around here as much as I used to. I guess I'm not a minitruck junkie anymore.

    Hey Greg,

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread but this mod is coming up soon on my list. Is your tach install still working well and what brand tach did you use? Looks like a "Sunpro" in your pic?

It still works even with the civic engine. It's a sunpro cp2012. The only thing I have not gotten to work is the speedo. (Honda is electronic). It was end of life when I got it so probably not going to find one. Any 3cyl tach should work. Pretry easy to install.

    Thanks!

I'll try to track one down, hopefully with a dedicated 3 cylinder setting.

I've been meaning to add a tach for years. Of course, unless I know what redline is supposed to be, it probably doesn't do me much good!

    Equis model 6068, 7068, 8068, and 8080 will work on 1-12 cylinder.
I used the 6068 on my 92 hijet. The instructions are easy to understand and to follow. In Canada the tach was $100, and well worth it because now I know that 6000RPM is 58 MPH

At 6000 rpm my truck is maybe touching 90 KPH, OR 55 MPH. It’s just a screaming, peddle flat to the floor, that all there is, there ain’t no more.

Looks like what I remember. I think it's in this thread where I said what wire it was. Blue or green with pink stripe cones to mind. It's been years tho and mine it's a 99

Ok. Was wrong. Earlier in this thread on page 1 and 2 I posted some info that might give you indication of what you should be looking for. 2 Daihatsus mine and someone I helped were different. My daihatsu had the twin cam motor. Might be why it was different.

No problem. More specifically it is under the cover in the center that covers the floor. Just below the bottom of the dash.

Im not sure. It's been years since I've messed with it. Can you find it up near the cluster? Might have to pull back some tape and wire loom.
