Well, after two years of claim free driving, my insurance renewal came in today without my Suzuki Carry listed. I phoned my broker, who informed me that GORE Insurance would no longer be insuring RHD vehicles. Update: the broker just called back, to tell me that NO-ONE other than Facility Risk(ie: expensive), who want an appraisal, certification and history on the vehicle)was insuring RHD vehicles any longer in Ontario, and possibly not in any province other than BC. Apparently classic/historic insurance may be available, but with that I can't even take an historic motorcycle in the back to a car show. WTF now? By the way, I may soon have both a 1990 Carry and a 1992 Acty Van for sale.

What is it with the bird brains that run our countries and cities. I answered my own question "bird brains". Its like they dont want any progress with anything. They beat in our heads we have to cut our oil usage but when we find something that will its "work against them" any way we can.

There is the #1 reason I vote for anyone who wants to reduce the size of government...reduces the # of fools who want to make their mark by creating stupid laws and regulations....if government decides to make insurance mandatory and then regulates who gets to provide it and at what price..they should then make sure that insurance is available ....by the way I just got another right drive vehicle added to my policy and there was no problem...I'm sure there are few right drive insurers, but for your broker to say no-one does it..I would say he is being lazy or doesn't represent anyone who does the coverage.....

What is behind not issuing insurance to RHD vehicles anyways? Is it the Fast & Furious types bringing in Skylines?

it's the same thing that is destroying the motorcycle industry in Canada...giving assent to certain large companies(essentially monopolies) to control a government regulated industry...10 companies all offering the same rate...lack of competition, huge rate increases and lowered coverage (all approved by the left leaning car hating provincial government)....it's a no-brainer for the insurance companies...if you are going to need a vehicle to drive no matter what..they will make it tough for you to drive anything that is slightly out of the norm...either way they have you by the short and curlies...you either pay ridiculous premiums,or drive something else..they win no matter what.....

Some time ago our family owned Yamaha Dealership bought eleven or 12 scooters in Ohio. Older brother ask me to go pick them up. After picking them up from the warehouse I didnt get 5 miles down the road and the Ohio DOT pulled me over and asked where my dot #'s were on my truck. Dont get me wrong the trooper was real nice. I told him I didnt think I needed dot #'s because I was picking up my family owned business products. I wasnt for hire and we have been picking up our own motorcycles for 38 yrs. and I have never been pulled over for not having dot #'s. I think the trooper wasnt sure of his own law so he let me go. He did tell me to check with my Texas dot and ask them about intrastate hauling. Well I did when I got back to Texas. Spent a couple of hrs. on the phone trying to find a person that could answer my question about picking up our own products. No one could give me a direct yes or no answer. After a couple of weeks and hrs. on the phone I got a hold of someone that said "no" you can not pick up your own products out of state without dot #'s. My response was so I am forced to either hire it out or get my dot #'s, log book and put up with all the rules and regs. a regular transportation co. has to get. Yes, you are correct was the reply, if your truck trailer and load is over 10,000lbs.
But with all that said if you are hauling for your personal self not a business up to 26000lbs. its ok, dont need dot #'s.
    Go figure.
Hmmmmmmm, I think for now on I'll take my business signs off my truck and haul for my personal self up to 26000lbs.
Hey, thats what the dot lady told me. Haul for your personal self.
Up until these last couple of yrs, I would tell someone work hard, save your money, pile up enough capital and someday start your own business. I am beginning to think on backtracking on that statement.

Agreed that giving control of a public necessity to corporations is often a recipe for disaster. Might as well keep it a crown corp like Manitoba or BC - at least that way you can elect politicans to change its policies. That being said in Quebec, there weren't the voters to support RHD. In Ontario, we're just screwed.

Nerd policy talk, apologies in advance:

Problem with de-regulating private insurance is that as the Americans know, the easiest ways to make money in insurance are to 1) deny claims, 2) fool your customers into buying crap coverage that they can't collect on, and 3) only insure the most profitable customers.

In most insurance (house, life, etc.) it's basically all the customer's problem. But in driving insurance, there's a lot more ways for insurance companies to get rich off the public dime.

    * Since car drivers hit non-insured people/stuff all the time, it's key that insurance companies can't skimp on liability coverage. Otherwise, we'd be left having to sue every cheapskate that ran over our grandmother, poor people would be even more totally screwed, and the insurance corp lawyers would be the only ones winning. Sounds good to save a few bucks until you get run over in a parking lot and need a new hip.
    * Since we have a public healthcare system, anything the insurance company denies coverage gets punted onto "the taxpayer". So skimping on coverage for personal injury to save a few bucks is fine and all, but that just means the rest of us (even non-drivers) pay for your ICU time. And if the public system denied you anyway and you end up crippled for life, society ends up the poorer (for not getting your taxes, lol)
    * Since most everyone requires a car to be a productive member of society, it's in the public good for even the unprofitable to be insured. Private insurers then know they have a backstop to punt everyone they can't make a profit from (Facility).

So privatized car insurance still needs government to regulate the risk put on others, medical costs put on yourself, and the 'leftovers'. With all that, why not just let the government run the whole thing and save on lawyers, paperwork, and executive bonuses?

    ... Am I wrong, Dude?

I agree with you because any time the government makes something mandatory ,it should also take up the responsibility for running that entity you can't make laws and then have others enforce them, and I believe that mandatory insurance is a good law . The problem being that political whims can (and as we have seen in Manitoba ) do take over the system...great to have a government insurance system but it seems the Manitoba government (NDP car haters again)is doing everything in it's power to make owning a RHD vehicle unappealing. If the NDP gets the chance to choose what vehicles we drive (or worse the greens) then we will all be on bicycles...exaggeration I know..but, not by much..

I find out later today if I can get insurance through Hagarty, a classic car coverage that is not as restrictive as Silverwheels. I tried Dejardains when I was initially looking for insurance, and they told me "no way".

  11. packrat

    packrat Member

Well Hagerty won't insure anything worth less than $15000, so I suppose that excludes any minitruck. The brokerage also told me that my only option would be with facility risk. This is a seperate brokerage from where my vehicles are insured. Sounds like insurance in Ontario has successfully destroyed the minitruck in Ontario. I'm not sure what to do next. Move to BC like everyone else from Toronto with any sense?

Who insures all the RHD Canada Post vehicles? Maybe better look into that.

Yeah, Sask is a breeze in most cases for insurance. Check with other brokers. Not all brokers deal with all companies. We could also start our own insurance company if you want. RHD only! (Ok, you can insure your LHD too, but only if you have a RHD)

There are probably 10,000+ RHD units in ontario. There is still coverage to be had.

    Mine is insured through Lombard......

  13. packrat

    packrat Member

OK, Lombard will not insure RHD any more, and no others I have contacted will either. All the brokers just tell me "we have no-one who is insuring them any longer". So....has anyone else come up for renewal lately? I'd really appreciate finding an insurance company that (1) is not facility risk, and expensive. (2) Silverwheels, that is very restrictive ie: no driving to work, can't be left in a parking lot, cannot carry anything in the box, limited mileage. Anybody in Ontario who can steer me in the right direction? Even Right Drive doesn't recommend anyone. I'm at wits end. Thanks.

I got my renewal in the mail yesterday - no problems, and my premium dropped $3/mo. I'm not under any special group plan either.

    It's not quite dead yet...

If we lived in a perfect world, things would work in a reasonable manner.
But, it isn't, and they don't.

Unfortunetlly, you have "tipped" your hand through the broker to just about every insurance company you had access to, and you have been singled out, and shut down. They don't want to insure what you have.

If I was just talking hypothetically, say, about someone in a similar situation, I would tell them to go through a new broker, and get their SUZUKI SJ VIN# insured for PLPD so that they could put it back on the road.

If someone ever asks you if it is a RHD, your answer is...."what's that"...

Sometimes, you got to do, what you got to do, reasonable or not.
This is just a RANT, not interested in any moral or legal descussion.

My broker is KPL in Ottawa (never seen her face to face) they had the best rates for my bike cars (rhd and lhd) try them

Well, if lombard wont renew my Carry or insure my Sprinter Saloon Diesel 4wd (Corolla) or Nissan Terrano Regulus (Diesel pathfinder) when they get here, they lose my LHD, home and business policies as well.

We all may as well "conform" to the rest of the world and all get Tauruses and Aleros.

Or have the mini trucks converted (poorly) to LHD in which they are likely more dangerous due to the conversion process.

Once again - Who is insuring Canada Post's RHD delivery units?

"Once again - Who is insuring Canada Post's RHD delivery units?" I'm not certain... but I think the right hand drive vehicles that Canada Post uses are owned by a "Crown Corporation" if they are (and I suspect this is the case) they don't have any insurance coverage just like military vehicles. You can be just like them and NOT have an insurance policy... trouble is... you need to take out a one million dollar bond to cover any potential problems (someone I know has one).

ps: I insure through "The Personal" and they cover me no issue

The Canadian government underwrites itself ....insurance is merely the financial ability to cover damages(either your own or other parties) if found to be at fault. The Gov. has the funds to cover it.....so actually we Canadians insure the RHD postal vehicles....:sly::confused::)

Apparently that has something to do with it. The companies got together and just decided not to insure them any more. I jst got an email back from yet another broker who has been insuring minitrucks etc. and they also say that their carriers will no longer insure us. Back to square one.

Well, I have extinguished all means of getting insurance that I can think of and as of Sunday the Carry will be off the road. The only option in Ontario is now facility risk (thousands of $), or Silverwheels classic car coverage that is so restrictive as to be absolutely useless. I don't understand how private companies are now able to mandate, within Ontario that certain LEGALLY registered vehicles cannot be driven on public roads. As of now I have a 1990 Carry and a 1992 Acty van for sale as is where is. OH yeah, you can't drive them home.

Is the Honda 4wd? How much?

It's two wheel drive, and I haven't decided how much yet. I may still put classic coverage on it. Besides, right now I am pretty well pissed off, and may cool down later and see what other options such as registering them in BC are available. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. Thanks

Well yeah, in a rage I was hoping you would give it away ;)

I have just called my agent to get rates on a Toyota Sprinter Saloon and a Nissan Terrano Regulus.

I explained that if they are not interested in insuring these, then they lose all my current insurance (2 other vehicles, house, and business)

    Will see what they say.

I had a Toyota Sprinter Carib wagon down in New Zealand. Great car, and it even had hydraulic lifting suspension for offroading. Had a great time with it. I also had 4 vehicles with which to bargain with to insurance companies/brokers. They all said the same thing. " no one is offering coverage any more in Ontario". Good luck with your search.

Here in alberta you can still insure, as of last week anyways. I had no prob getting insurance for my delica. My mini truck isnt insured as it is just an acreage vehicle. The only thing they requested was an appraisal, which i guess is alright as there is no blue book value listed. I am through aviva, not sure if they are in ontario area.

Well, I have two perfectly good (and one licensed) minitrucks in my driveway, but I can't take them out other than on a trailer or a tow truck. This insurance thing is really pissing me off. How can they dictate what I can or cannot drive considering they are not the goverment. Oh yeah, since when did government have control. My mistake.

I fail to see how a homebuilt dunebuggy or T-bucket is safe to insure but a Minitruck isn't.......crossing my fingers I'm still insured on both my truck and Mira...but my renewal isn't due til Nov.

I just got my renewal in the mail TODAY. (Holy lucky! With the idiotic strikers screwing everything up with mail. We now ship Purolator courier and apologize to those that have parts in the mail system, including parts I have incoming that will arrive.... who knows when)

My Carry is renewed with no increase.

HOWEVER, they did decline to cover the Sprinter and Terrano. I politely explained to my broker to find someone who will, immediately so I can pull ALL my coverage from Lombard ASAP.

Worst case, I guess I move back to Saskatchewan where you can get any RHD insured quite easily. (DOH! That would suck!)
