It's only for 4 or 5 years. Besides they have to pander to the center now there's no more room for growth anywhere else.
Hell, even the Orange Crush is going to have to do the same.

out here it was no contest. liberals were crushed, NDP wasnt even close. i think for sask conservs had a 7x lead on the ndp even and they were 3x ahead of the liberals followed by the green party.

unfortunately the communist party of canada did not run..

This country needs electoral reform. First past the post basically forces a 2-party system. For awhile it was Reform + PC, and the Libs ran the show. Now it's Libs + NDP, and the Cons run it.

I hope England agrees to switch to Alternative Vote, it seems like the best way to keep local representation but reduce vote-splitting.

What a nice treat to be able to drive our mini trucks on the road in Canada.

We need less government regulations/taxes and more freedom which is what Canada voted for.

Canada's best days are to come. There is great potential and hope for those citizens that want to work and not sit on their asses looking for a hand out. We are ahead of the rest of the world out of the recession. We have great natural resources which are in high demand.

Regrading your comment about South America, Yes consumables like a coca-cola would cost 40-50% less in places like Brazil over Canada but that is meaningless when a typical worker is making $200 to 300 a month, 10 times less than Canada.

I'm with Meesho...why would we want to change a government that is working.....Liberals had a completely clueless platform and the NDP promised to make everyone rich by raising taxes and implementing cap and trade carbon taxes (theres that ugly T word again) NDP promised to re-open the issue of Quebec confederation again..and both those parties attempted to take control of the "DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED" government by teaming up with the seperatists...how does this sit well with anyone???.....4 times (now 5 ) in the last 5 years Canadians have elected the Conservatives, but the other 2 parties have shown their lack of regard for democracy and not allowed the winning party to govern....besides costing billions of dollars in elections what have the Liberals and NDP accomplished ?? they have just confirmed over and over again that what the "people" of this country want doesn't matter to them..not part of their agenda...the NDP only grew because Quebecers were promised more by Jack Layton than the bloc ever dared to....and once they realize Jack is a joke who will say anything for a vote, they will throw him out as well.....will the Conservatives make mistakes..yup..prob. pass some crappy laws..for sure..no one can ever completely please everyone ...but throwing out a Party that is working and swapping for either of the others would be a huge mistake

Well, keeping it close to home, us minitruckers in Alberta and Ontario (privately-run insurance) have more trouble getting insured than those in BC or Manitoba (government-run insurance).

Sometimes government regulation is the least-bad alternative... Without it, you're free only as far as you're profitable to the banks, insurance companies, resource extractors, landlord rent-collectors, and the super-rich.

Nobody here on "either side" is going to defend the banks, ultra rich and mega corporations.

The Insurance industry is one of, if not THE highest regulated industries in Canada/ Ontario. The mega corporations use regulations to prevent competetion from smaller companies/ new start ups and to create a monopoly for themselves. That is ONE of the reason why you pay more in Ontario: Lack of TRUE competetion.

Look at telecom industry. Insane regulations and impossible for any new competitor to come into the market. That is why we pay $50-100/month for cell phone. Look at airline industry or any industry that is heavy regulated, mega corporations run the show and rip us off.

Regarding ICBC (insurance corp of BC). 1) Rates are accetpable if you are a new driver with accidents and tickets. But very high especially if you are an experienced problem free driver. Private insurance is available in BC on liability/collision and it is cheaper if you are a good driver. 2) If you drive certain vehicles, you pay double in some cases. BC is not cheap by any stretch and the service is ****!!

Regarding MPIC (manitoba public insurance corp), 1) One of reasons why rates are "low" is because there is the seperate unbiased "Public Utilities Board" that constantly scrutinizes the rates and operation of the public company to keep the government workers in line. 2) There is "no fault" insurance which means everyone gets a settlement for injuries, millions and millions are saved in laywer fees 3) Another reason is that the wages paid to employees are very low, used parts are used to repair your vehicle, etc etc.

Yep. When I hear people repeat the same conservative lies as anything resembling a fact it just gets my blood boiling. Not the place though... :)

without re-opening it ...I stated no lies...The raised taxes and cap n trade came straight from the NDP's mouth....and it is a fact that the 3 losing parties in the last several elections have tried several times to overthrow the democratically elected government.in the process costing hundreds of millions of dollars.....facts not lies

I never said I agreed with it when it was proposed in 2004...democratically elected is democratically elected...it is the choice of the majority of the people....how can someone be so blase regarding their vote..what is the point of voting in a democracy if your vote gets usurped by poor losers....I am not a Harper loyalist...none of the national parties shares my views..but the conservatives represent the best choice at the moment...just my opinion

Are you from a parallel universe?...in this universe there certainly has not been 5 elections in the last 5 years???? :)

Even in this election where teh Conservatives won a majority of seats, a majority of the people did not vote for the Conservatives. In this election 40% of the total votes cast were for the Conservatives...meaning 60% did not...so even with their big win they do not technically represent a majority of Canadian citizens.

In the last couple elections in which the Conservative won the most seats but were not in a majority position the % total votes was much less. It was around 25% in 2008...meaning 75% of Canadian citizens did not.

Math...another thing Harper plans to make illegal.

I think that I felt beforehand, that there would be no happy outcome from the Election. I honestly did pull for and believe the Con's the last time around, and was fed up with the liberal thievery, and personally would never side with the NDP, but the con's didn't do much last time, and plenty are upset with the gov't - and it seems to be based on reality this time (remember "hidden agenda" campaign of years past).

I figured the best outcome would be if all the parties, greens included, would end up with 10 to 15 percent. Then maybe they would grab a clue that they work for us, and would have to smarten up.

Well, we ended up with a conservative majority. I have to say that I didn't expect to be pleasantly surprised, but I was overjoyed that the bloc did so poorly, I was glad the lib's did too, and also (even though I don't support them at all) was glad the NDP did so well. Beyond that, Iggy and sevendouche, erm.. douch-sept got beat so badly.. damn that was awesome!

How about this for elections like this:
Your vote can be used AGAINST someone. You can actually use your vote to cancel someone elses! What do you think of that?

By next election there will only be 2 official parties especially if Bob Rae is next leader of Liberals. He is already going around the media saying a merger isn't a bad idea. Bloc is no longer an official party. And Elizabeth May party lost 50% of her total votes over last election which means she will get 50% less cash to campaign next time which will be major set-back.

Since the introduction of the 3rd party in Canadian Federal politics in 1921, there has only been 2 out of 27 governments that have recieved more than 50.1% of the vote. Same goes for Provincial politics starting 80 years ago. Governing party rarely gets 50.1%+.

you are absolutely correct I had a brain fart....there have been 3 elections in 5 years...I'm so sick of elections I'm adding mayoral and provincial to the federal...

either way makes no difference..this election was forced upon us by poor losers who got shown the door by the voters......I have yet to hear ANY..reason as to why the Conservatives are such a bad choice...

Everyone keeps mentioning Lib-NDP merger, but the Libs are philosophically closer to the Cons than the NDP. The Lib electors are middle-of-the-road types.
Which is good for all, because both sides will have to move towards the center to attract any more support.
Especially Harper. I'd look for him to ignore the far right now to attract those middle of the roaders. Some Conservative fiscal responsibility without the right wing social nonsense would do us all good.

To be quite honest, I'd much prefer a dictator. The problem with that is, that there are far too few people that would be able to do this type of management without corruption and idiocy, and even fewer that you could trust before the term is settled. It would be interesting to be able to select someone from outside of politics by popular vote for 2 years or something.

Yeah, I know this wouldn't work. Still fun to think of the possibilities!

I am just posting to apologize for anything I may have written that seemed harsh.......I have just been fed up with listening to co-workers (unionized government employees of course) whine about the end of the world if the Conservatives win...also my union trying to tell me how to vote has been especially irritating...:frustration:

Yes in Ontario we have supposedly "private insurance" we do not...we have regulated insurance controlled by the Ministry of finance...they set the rates and coverage minimums,............it's no different from gas prices and cell phones as Meesho points out...lack of competition ..3 companies offering the same rates and services is not competition

This has been a very enlightening thread! I used to listen to some Canadian radio when I was home so I am somewhat familiar with all of this:) IMO down south our politics all went to hell when politicians figured out they can buy votes with medicare and such. everybody wants the freebie. It's really too bad. everybody wants a job but no one wants to work.

This election was forced upon us because the conservative party was found to be in contempt of parliment...A CRIME...and as such parliment was disolved. They did not fall on the budget as Harper continually stated...another bold faced LIE he repeated and repeated.

Anyone questioning why we had an election is simply announcing their ignorance to our own democratic system. Its like getting angry at the police for wasting tax dollars because they did their job and captured a murderer and put them in jail.

They were found in contempt by the losing parties who never got what they wanted..when they tried to overthrow the government last year..so they did it again...they had PLANNED..not my words..theirs.. to force an election because they believed they could win .......a ridiculous ploy that OBVIOUSLY the Canadian people did not buy into.

I forgot ..valid questions are signs of ignorance...
